Wine of Zamorak

Wine of Zamorak is the secondary ingredient for ranging potions, a rather high-level Herblore product that is regularly made both for its effects when consumed and the XP it provides. Like mort myre fungus, this wine is another secondary ingredient that is only obtained using a rather unusual procedure. It is taken from a spawn, but as we’ll see, one that’s rather different than those of items like snape grass or red spiders’ eggs.

“STOP STEALING MY WINE! GAH!”

There is only one place where you can find wine of Zamorak: a single spawn on a table in the chaos temple located northwest of the Goblin Village and southeast of Burthorpe. The temple has several monks of Zamorak milling about, which are low-level and not aggressive, so you’d think you could just walk in and grab it. Ah, but there’s a catch: it turns out that the evil god and his minions aren’t too keen on having their wine taken.

If you march into the temple and try to snatch the wine off the table, all of the monks within view of your position will attack you. What’s more, the game will not allow you to take the wine until each and every one of them is dead—even if some of them are stuck outside the temple! To add injury to insult, you will also be struck for 5 damage by good old Zammy himself (Figure 228), and your stats will all be lowered by about 5 points. Only after you’ve finished off all the monks can you take the wine—and even then, you get hit with the damage and stat drain again, every time you touch it.

It’s only wine, guys!

So how do you get the wine? Well, it seems Zammy and his monks aren’t terribly bright, because while they won’t let you take the wine with your hands, they have no problem with you stealing it using the Telekinetic Grab spell. So that’s what you do: you run up to the temple, cast telegrab on the wine, wait for it to respawn and repeat. Even if you do this right in front of the monks, they’ll leave you alone. (Duh…)

Getting to the Temple

The chaos temple is not in a convenient location by any means, tucked into the far northwest corner of F2P territory and far from any teleport. In my tests, I found two methods of getting to it that take about the same amount of time, so you can do whichever you prefer.

The first is to just to teleport to Falador and run north to the temple. Follow the path leading out of Fally Center, then take the left turn at the fork and continue up past the gate to Taverley. Hug the Taverley wall as you continue north and you’ll run into the temple.

The second technique is to use the balloon system unlocked by the Enlightened Journey quest. Head east and then north from Castle Wars to the assistant nearby, and fly to Taverley. Then go north, through the gate and continue north to the temple.

Method Description

Here, in detail, is the method I recommend for getting wines of Zamorak. Start at Castle Wars, and equip yourself with standard weight-reducing gear and an air staff. Then do the following:

  1. If you’re going to use the Falador method, withdraw from your bank 29 law runes and 1 water rune; if using the balloon, take out 28 law runes and 1 set of regular logs. (If you are using the “combining” method, you’ll also take out 26 unfinished ranging potions to fill the remaining spots in your inventory.)

  2. Teleport to Falador or use the balloon, then run to the temple.

  3. Go inside the temple and cast telekinetic grab on the wine of Zamorak on the table, as shown in Figure 229, then wait for it to respawn. This takes 15 seconds on a reasonably full world.

  4. Keep telegrabbing wines of Zamorak until you have 27 in your inventory and one law rune left. Drop one wine, cast telegrab to use up your last law and get your 28th wine, then pick up the one you dropped.

  5. Teleport back to Castle Wars, bank the wines and repeat.

Seems the monks and ol’ Zammy himself don’t want you to take the wine. Unless you telegrab it right out from under their noses, of course. J

The process is really quite simple to do—well, at least it is once you know about the whole “don’t touch the wine or you get attacked by Zamorak” thing. J In my test, it took me 9:40 to get 28 wines, which works out to around 185 per hour.

Recommendations

Telegrabbing Zammy wines is a very slow and tedious process, but if you want to get them yourself, you have no other choice. (Yes, I’ve tried doing it the “brute force” way and it is slower because of the need to keep killing the monks.)

With the wines currently selling for under 1k each, this is a decent way to make money for non-member players, but a rather poor way to save money for members who have many more options. So it is only recommended for those who have a philosophical objection to buying them from other players; everyone else is better off just buying them on the Grand Exchange.
