As discussed in the topic
on luring legality, the prohibition against
using luring players using false pretences applies only to tricking
players into the Wilderness. If you decide to go into the Wild on your
ownto engage in PKing, do a treasure trail, or work on a skill
requiring a resource in the Wildyou can be legally deceived, lured
or tricked by anyone in there. And as anyone with experience in the
Wild knows, deception and dishonesty is pretty much par for the course
there.
If you don't have a lot of experience
with the Wild, then you may not be familiar with some of the tricks
people play in there. As always, I am here to help you out; watch out
for the following, among others:
Equipment Switching: Never assume that
a player is a mage, a ranger or a meleer based on the armor or weapons
they are wearing when you see them. A common trick is to, for example,
dress up as a ranger hoping that a meleer will attack. The ranger then
changes to mage robes, breaks out Ancient Magicks ice spells, and takes
the fight.
Naked Newbie Tricks: Similarly,
watch out for one of the oldest tricks in the book, someone who walks
around the Wild wearing either nothing or low-level armor, hoping that
someone will think they are defenseless and have no idea what they are
doing. As soon as you attack, they will put on equipment and fight back
hard.
Pures: These characters are designed to
deceive players into thinking they are weaker than they are, and the
Wilderness is just crawling with them. You could attack someone who
is level 40 and find out that they actually have very high combat skills.
Wilderness Trades: If you agree willingly
to enter the Wild to trade, and there is no lying or misrepresentation
involved, you are on your own. Also watch out for trades initiated by
players once within the Wild; they may do this so the trade screen hides
your view, allowing a friend to sneak up on you.
Backstabbing: Just as some players will
ask to team up outside the Wild and then backstab you, the same can
happen once inside.
Clan Luring: PKing clans will send out
scouts to find victims. The scouts will team up
with the victim and lead him over to the clan, where he will be quickly
destroyed.
Multi-Combat Luring: Some PKers will attempt
to lure players from a single combat area to a multi-combat area, so
friends and/or clan members can attack the victim.
Monster Luring: PKers will often try to
lead you to places within the Wilderness where there are dangerous monsters
that can kill you. A popular choice is one of the green dragon areas,
since they can be deadly if you aren't wielding an anti-dragon shield.
Single Dot Deceptions: The
mini-map shows a white dot in any location where there is at least one
player, but it doesn't tell you how many are there. Some clans and teams
will lie in wait with all of their members standing in the same square,
so it looks like only one player is present. When a victim approaches,
they will all attack at once; watch out for this especially in multi-combat
areas.
There are many more gimmicks, of
course, so as always, be careful if you venture into the Wild,
and never take any items you aren't prepared to lose!
