“Legal deceptions”? If this sounds like an oxymoron, then that's because it is. J Confusion is to be expected when trying to understand the Wilderness, one of the more bizarre and contradictory parts of RuneScape. As mentioned in my discussion of the legality of luring, PKing inherently involves many acts that are misleading. Jagex could not want to ban all such activities, so they only prohibited ones where people use open lies or deceptions to lure people in the Wilderness. This leaves a whole category of lures and tricks that, while far from honest, are allowed by the current rules of the game.

Even though these lures are not considered illegal, they can still trap the unwary, so you need to understand them. I start with a look at baiting, a common form of legal luring, and discuss the nasty issue of PKer “backstabbing” and fake clan initiations. I explain the infamous “kill video” lure, and conclude with a look at some of the many ways that people within the Wild will gladly lead you to your doom.

Remember: if you willingly go into the Wild, and nobody lied to get you there, you are on your own. And once you are in the Wild, anyone can lie to you or lure you to more dangerous Wilderness locations, and it is not reportable. So don't go in unless you are sure you know what you are doing.

WARNING: Jagex has been very inconsistent in its definitions of illegal luring and its enforcement of luring reports. There are some lures that I believe are legal based on my best understanding of Jagex's current position on the matter, but regardless of my classifications, I do not guarantee that you can do these things and avoid punishment. Personally, I consider all lures to be unethical behavior and I recommend that good players engage in none of them. Ignore this recommendation only at your own risk.
