What to Do If You Are Lured

If being item scammed is upsetting—and it is—then being lured is even worse. While I've never been lured myself, I can understand why this would be the case. Being item scammed is annoying, but at least it's over quickly, and you can hopefully chalk it up to experience. Being lured means you have to stand there and watch as the scumbag lurer kills you or watches you be killed, and you usually can't do anything about it. To add insult to injury, in the case of Wilderness lures, the lurer and his “friends” will usually, well, add insult to injury, calling you names and taunting you as you die.

So what can you do when you realize you've been lured? That really depends entirely on the nature of the lure, how quickly you discover that you've been set up, and the abilities of your RuneScape character.

First of all, if the lure was an illegal one, such as one involving bug abuse, non-Wilderness luring, or lying to trick you into the Wild, then report the lurer immediately. Specify either Rule #2 (item scamming) or Rule #4 (bug abuse) as appropriate.

If you are lured into a dangerous place outside the Wilderness, obviously try to get out. Teleport, run for the exit, eat food if you have it to stay alive, and take an anti-poison potion if you have one. If you are lured into the Wilderness or somewhere else that you have a chance to stay alive, then try to survive! Even though in many cases you won't have a chance, it's always worth trying to get out of the situation rather than giving up. If nothing else, you'll feel a measure of self-respect that you did all you could. Here are some things to try:

  • Teleport: If you are below level 20 Wilderness or outside of it, try to teleport out of danger. This may not be possible—you might not have a tele on you or might be teleblocked—but don't forget to try it if you can.

  • Run: Most lures into the Wild result in the victims being attacked in low-level Wilderness. Lurers and their friends in the Wilderness will usually try Ancient Magicks ice spells on you to freeze you in place. However, these will not always work the first time, and they do wear off. So keep trying to run back out of the Wilderness, as long as you can.

  • Fight Back: It may be pointless, but again, it might make you feel better, and you might get lucky and kill the other person instead. Don't forget to eat if you have food!

  • Drop Expensive Items: If you are killed by a lurer, he will see all of your items on the ground as soon as you die. If you drop the items before dying, you get up to 60 seconds to try to get back and retrieve the item before the lurer can see it.

If you do die as a result of a lure, there's not a lot you can do, other than reporting the person and trying to learn from the experience. Make a mental note of what mistakes you made that allowed you to fall victim, and try not to repeat them. Also review the descriptions of lures here on TruthScape so you don't fall for other lures in the future. If you fall prey to a lure that is substantially different from the ones I cover here, please let me know.

Don't bother posting on the RuneScape forums about the scam. Jagex doesn't allow the discussion of scams, so your post will be hidden and the thread locked. And worse, before that happens, a few selfish jerks will jump in with nasty comments directed at you, which won't help.

Above all, don't beat yourself up. We all make mistakes, and in time you can recover from any in-game loss.
