Very-High-Level Training Recommendations (Levels 82 to 98)

Level 82 Herblore grants you the ability to make super weapon poison, currently the highest-level regular potion in Herblore. There is still the magic mix potion at level 83 and the Zamorak mix at level 85, but these are rarely made or used. Effectively, then, level 82 marks the practical completion of the Herblore skill. This raises an obvious question: should you even bother to go beyond level 82?

For many players, the answer is “no”, and that includes myself—I stopped actively training Herblore when I hit level 82. For me, this was an easy decision; I had originally trained the skill for the independence factor of being able to make all the different potions, so I saw no real reason to go beyond. This was before barbarian potions came out, and I eventually devoted a bit more effort to eventually get up to level 85, but it certainly wasn’t a high priority for me.

Those who continue training beyond level 82 are basically doing it for their own reasons: a sense of accomplishment, perhaps, or maybe to earn an Herblore skillcape. This is perfectly fine, if you enjoy Herblore and want to keep working on the skill for its own sake. You do have to be realistic, however, in recognizing that Herblore becomes a very challenging and/or expensive skill above level 80 or so.

Skill Training

There aren’t any specific “must have” skill requirements to aim for in working on very-high-level Herblore; it’s more of a situation where the higher your overall levels are, the better. You’re advised to continue training all of your skills in a balanced way, especially Farming, which should remain an important co-training skill with Herblore as you level up. Achieving a level of around 85 in Farming will let you grow everything in that skill, allowing you access to the full range of farmed herbs and Herblore ingredients.

Quest Completion

You should be sure that you’ve completed the Watchtower quest, for access to cave nightshade. As this is a rather low-level quest, most herblorists will have done it long ago anyway.

Herb Gathering

Nothing much really changes with respect to herb gathering from what I mentioned in the discussion of high-level training, except that you need more and more herbs to meet your leveling goals. You’ll want to keep increasing your combat levels and invest in quality equipment to allow you to get herb drops more quickly. If you enjoy the Fist of Guthix minigame, then some of the herb gloves available there may also be a good idea.

Continue Farming, growing either snapdragons for cash or higher-level herbs for both Farming and Herblore XP. The Grand Exchange is a boon for high-level farmers, as it makes getting very high-level herb seeds like dwarf weed and torstol much easier.

There aren’t any alternative herb gathering techniques that are specifically well-suited to very high-level players. I recommend using a mix of these to help alleviate boredom. Of course, if you plan to buy the skill, then you’ll just purchase what you need from other players anyway.

Potion Making

There are only two overall approaches to Herblore above level 80: train quickly by spending tens of millions on potion ingredients and selling the potions at a loss, or taking the slow but steady approach, which may mean it takes many months to get to level 99. You can choose middle ground between these to some extent, of course.

If you have a lot of money and want to get an Herblore cape or just a much higher level, you can effectively buy the skill by investing money you earn in other ways into Herblore components. You then simply make a ton of high-level potions and dump the pots for a loss on the Grand Exchange. The most common potions used for this purpose are super restores (which are the most cost-effective high-level potion), magic potions, ranging potions, and especially Saradomin brews (the highest-XP potion that can be made in quantity). If you go this route, be prepared to lose up to 100 million in gold in getting from level 82 to 99, depending on the exact method you use and prevailing market conditions.

On the other end of the spectrum is to take a more laid-back approach, with a combination of opportunistic leveling and making potions for your own use. This will be slow, but if you’re not in a hurry, it is a far more cost-effective technique.

Alternative Leveling Methods

Naturally, at the very highest levels you can use all of the alternative leveling methods in the skill. Of particular note for players level 82 and above is the ability to make super weapon poison; you may be interested in trying this in the skavid cave while alching noted items between spawns. Another high-level option is making higher-level barbarian potions, though the market for these is small.

Beyond that, use a combination of the same techniques I discussed in the prior topic: harralander tar, grimy herbs, unfinished potions, the Assist System and more. Try to aim for variety to help stave off skill burnout, a big problem with those going for level 99 in any skill.
