Using Tele-Other to Distract Players During Combat

This arguably is not a “lure” in the conventional sense, because it doesn't actually involve the victim being lured, nor a monster. However, it's a scam of the same general nature as the other lures described in this subsection, because it can be used by a selfish person to cause a victim to be killed for his items. You need to understand how it works and how to avoid it - luckily, that is easy to do.

This scheme makes use of the three teleother spells, which allow a high-level mage to teleport someone else to Lumbridge, Falador or Camelot. Normally these spells are quite useful; higher-level players will often help lower-levels by teleporting them to places they cannot teleport themselves. The problem is with how the spells are implemented: every time the spell is cast on someone, it pops up a large message that blocks the entire screen, asking if you agree to be teleported.

This can be an annoyance under normal circumstances, but during combat it can be deadly. Cruel people will sometimes go to areas where people are fighting difficult monsters and cast this on them; the teleport message will pop up, distracting the player in combat. The player will clear the message, only to have the lurer cast it again and again. This can confuse a player enough to be killed; for example, he might forget to drink a prayer potion and not notice that his prayer has run out.

The best way to avoid this problem is to turn off the “Accept Aid” feature, which tells the game that you don't want anyone “helping” you (ahem) with teleother. To turn it off, click the “wrench” icon at the bottom right of the RuneScape interface, then click the white medical bag with the red cross on it so it is not highlighted red.

The “traditional” place where this trick has been pulled in the past is at the Barrows. The reason is that the Barrows brothers are very dangerous, but a lurer can easily go where others are fighting them yet be in no danger himself. Always make sure you have “Accept Aid” turned off before heading to the Barrows.

Incidentally, I don't believe that this behavior is considered reportable, because there are no rules against casting teleother spells on people.
