At first only a few noticed what was happening, and then a few more. But after two weeks or so, it became obvious to nearly everyone in RuneScape: prices are dropping. In some cases they are going down fast, with even some of the most useful and popular goods depreciating by as much as 50% or more.

The price drops have led to angry players upset over losing money, changes to how thousands play the game, and demands for new features to be undone. Players are wildly pointing fingers at different causes they feel are responsible for the decline, usually focusing on only one factor in what is really a complex situation. Jagex, for its part, has said basically nothing, leaving folks to wonder what the company’s take is on the current state of affairs. Add all of it together and you get a great deal of unnecessary anxiety and confusion.

In this special report I try to sift through all the claims and controversies, to help you understand better what I am now calling the RuneScape Market Crash of 2007. This includes an analysis of the economy’s current status, and an effort to paint a more complete and realistic picture of what got us here.
