As 2007 draws to a close, it’s time to look back and reflect on the year gone by. It’s certainly been an interesting one for me personally—after all, 12 months ago I never imagined myself being a RuneScape commentator, or running this site! For the game as a whole and the community within it, 2007 has also seen some excellent new features, important changes, and no small share of controversy. Many believe that the year will ultimately be viewed as having been a pivotal one in the evolution of RuneScape.

In this special report, I look back on some of the major content additions, enhancements and changes that have been made to the game, and provide my assessment of them. Each page covers a particular type of update, such as new areas, minigames and items, updates to existing content, game interface improvements and policy updates. Within each page I list the major relevant updates in chronological order, give my views on each, and assign them letter grades that reflect my overall appraisal of the update. The last section provides more general assessment of various areas of the game and of Jagex’s performance, and I end with a summary conclusion.

For the record, this article does not discuss and grade every single update in the game, only ones that I felt were particularly noteworthy—and even so, there’s a lot to cover! I should point out in particular, that I have not reviewed quests or holiday events, mainly because whether these are viewed as good or bad tends to be almost entirely a matter of personal taste. I hate most quests anyway, so you wouldn’t want to read my views on them! All that said, if you do feel I missed an important update, please let me know.

Finally, let me remind you that while I try to base my reviews and grades on factual analysis, these are in the end my opinions. So please don’t write to me claiming that I am being “unobjective”, any more than you would say this to a movie critic. J
