At the start of every month, Jagex publishes a “Behind the Scenes” article that tells players what to expect in terms of updates to RuneScape in that month. The company also sometimes likes to give out even longer range hints about its major updates, sometimes months in advance. All of this seems intended to get players excited about new features, quests, monsters and other aspects of the game well before they arrive. And it works—discussing future updates is a “pastime” of many RuneScape players.

Now, I’m not usually one to spend a lot of time speculating about upcoming features, since I figure I’ll get to experience them within the game soon enough. On the other hand, occasionally I see something new on the way that I think is worthy of some commentary and analysis before it arrives. When I do, I will publish a sneak preview about it here for your enjoyment.

In this comprehensive preview I give you my thoughts on what I think the new system will be like, how it will impact different types of players and the markets for various types of items, and a lot more. I also put to rest any fears you may have about this change “causing the economy to crash”.
