I’ll be the first to admit that the new Summoning skill has problems that need to be addressed. At the same time, it has annoyed me since the day the skill came out to see so many ignorant people write it off entirely as “useless”. Even worse, they tell others, who then perpetuate this myth, often without ever even bothering to try out the skill for themselves.

Well, I’ve now spent more time using this skill than 99% of RuneScape players. And the truth is that while some of the Summoning familiars are, shall we say, less than fantastic, many of them are not just useful but very useful. My hope is that reading this guide will help you gain a new appreciation for Summoning, by seeing exactly what familiars can do, and possibly learning some new methods for exploiting them that perhaps you hadn’t considered before.

Of course, I’m not here to give you a sales job—as is always the case here at TruthScape, I give you the straight scoop about what is really useful and what is not worth the bother. But I really think that if you give familiars a chance, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by some of them.

This section is divided into five parts. The first provides an overview of the practical aspects of summoning and managing familiars, including discussions of how to handle the familiar timer and special move bar. The second tells you all about non-combat familiar abilities in general terms, including how to use beasts of burden and followers that enhance skills and forage or produce items. The third subsection explores using Summoning in combat situations; this includes a discussion of what makes familiars good or bad in combat, and lots of tips for getting the most out of them in battle. The fourth part provides general reference information and rankings for the familiars, while the fifth contains an individual explanation of each familiar covered in the guide so far.

Please remember that this guide is a work in progress. For starters, the skill is new, and at the time of writing my Summoning level is only 71, so I cannot access all familiars yet (though I’m working on it when I have a chance!) Also, the initial version of this section provides details on only 10 of the current 47 Summoning familiars; I did this to get the information I have already written online more quickly, and will add the other familiars’ information as soon as possible.

NOTE: I assume that those reading this section have a basic understanding of the Summoning skill in general terms. Eventually I will have a full exploration of the skill here on TruthScape, but for now, if you are new to Summoning, I suggest you start by reviewing the RuneScape knowledge base entries on the skill.
