Summoning wasn’t always going to be the first skill covered in TruthScape Skill Secrets. I’ve always understood the importance of skills, so I began planning this feature of the site in the fall of 2007, before we knew that Summoning was on its way. When it was announced, like most other players, I was very excited about it—in part because of Jagex’s big buildup, and just because new skills are always fun. So I decided that I would set aside the other skill I had been working on, in favor of launching this part of the site with a Summoning guide.

My original plan was based on what I thought was Jagex’s plan: I would begin learning about the skill and writing it up in January, and then publish the guide in February, after the second set of familiars was released. This was to be a full guide covering all aspects of the skill: getting charms, gathering secondary ingredients, making pouches, using familiars, and so forth.

Well, as we all know, Jagex’s plans changed. Just as I had figured out what monsters were the best to get charms, they changed the charm drop rates—and then changed them back. And then they decided to delay the second crop of familiars as well. It became clear to me that Jagex was making changes to how the skill was to be trained—and that some of them were likely substantial. It didn’t make sense for me to spend a lot of time telling you how to train a skill that was probably being revamped, so I had to go to Plan B, which was exploring familiars themselves.

I really wanted to show everyone what familiars could do, and at the same time, I thought this was the aspect of the skill least likely to have radical changes. And so, I broke with my usual method of writing, and started my Summoning guide not at the beginning, but rather near the end: by telling you all about how you can use and benefit from familiars after you have trained the skill and you have all those pouches you don’t know what to do with.

Over time, as Jagex finishes developing and releasing this skill, I will expand this section to fully cover all aspects of Summoning. This will include sections containing an overview of the skill, details on training, how to get charms, the most efficient pouches to use for getting XP and much more.
