Making Herb Tars Selecting an Overall Herblore Training Approach

The preceding sections explained how Herblore works in general terms, showed you the materials you’ll be using and the products they make, and discussed the mechanics of the skill. Most guides stop there; they only tell you what you can do with the skill. But what you probably really want to know is what you should do if you want to train Herblore effectively.

It’s fine to list every potion you could possibly create, but which ones are worth assembling? You can get XP by cleaning grimy herbs, but is this worth the time it takes? Listing alternative products is also good, but are they worth making? Are there any ways to actually make money while getting Herblore XP? This section is the one that takes the important step beyond laundry lists of skill activities and advises you on the best ways to train.

In the subsections below, I share with you my best ideas and tips for training Herblore in a way that is fast, inexpensive and enjoyable. I start with a discussion of different approaches to training the skill; figuring out your goals for the skill is always the first step, after all. I then have two big subsections that outline the best methods for training Herblore by making potions, and also by using alternative methods. I show you how unfinished potions can be used to either get XP fast at the cost of money or vice-versa, depending on your needs. And then I give specific recommendations for how to prepare for and train Herblore at various levels.

For reference, Figure 162 illustrates the relative skill activity ratings of various Herblore training methods recommended in this section.

This skill activity ratings map shows the approximate speed and cost for some of the Herblore training methods I recommend in this guide. You can see that the most efficient methods fall roughly in a line from the top left to the bottom right, representing the classic trade-off between high-speed, high-cost training methods, and low-speed, low-cost (or even profitable) methods.
