Maintaining Mental Health in RuneScape Is RuneScape Educational? Yes, But Not the Way You Think

One of the biggest problems with RuneScape today is that Jagex has created a paradox due to how they have designed, marketed and run it: RuneScape is very much oriented towards children and younger teens, but the game and community are in many ways only appropriate for older teens and adults. More and more children sign on to play RuneScape every day—often with the approval of parents who are unaware of the true nature of the game—and this can have serious negative results.

This section is devoted to giving parents the straight scoop on the dangers of RuneScape for children and teens, especially younger children. I start out by discussing why it's a mistake it is to believe that the game is “educational”, and point out the many flaws and omissions in Jagex's “Parents’ Guide”. I provide some tips for parents on how to manage their kids who play RuneScape, and call on Jagex to improve parents’ ability to monitor and control their kids’ playing habits. Finally, in a concluding subsection, I discuss in detail the many issues related to children playing RuneScape, and some of the negative behaviors in the game that can affect them.
