Item scamming is one of the biggest problems plaguing RuneScape, and newer players are especially apt to fall victim to it. If you play RuneScape for any length of time, you will eventually run into many unscrupulous players who will try to cheat you out of your items. It's sad to think that there are so many dishonest people who would expend energy tricking others in what is supposed to be a fun game. Unfortunately, that's the way the RuneScape community is these days: while most players are honest and law-abiding, there is a sizable percentage that only wants to take from you whatever they can.

Jagex deliberately avoids providing information about common scams, a policy I strongly disagree with. I feel that your best defense against being scammed is understanding how scammers operate so you can protect yourself, and also knowing what the common scams are so you can watch out for them.

After that I have several subsections that describe specific scams in detail, telling you how to protect yourself from them. I include a subsection on safe trust trading and anti-scam trading methods, which frequent traders will find useful in telling the scammers and honest players apart. Finally, I conclude with a subsection that lists for historical purposes some scams that are now obsolete, thanks to changes Jagex has made to the game.
