The RuneScape Assist System - Myths and Truths

As I mentioned in “Invalid Complaints and Hysteria”, many RuneScape players have gone completely off the deep end regarding the new Assist System (AS). There have been so many bogus, ridiculous, incorrect claims and assumptions about the new feature that I felt it would be useful to collect some of the more common and insidious of these silly myths into one place, for more efficient dispelling.

I will explain briefly why each is a myth and what the truth is, along with links to some more detailed discussions in this guide and elsewhere. These are in no significant order, I just listed them so that the more common myths are generally closer to the top of the list.

Edit: Several myths and truths have been removed due to the removal of the four resource skills from the Assist System.

Myth #1: This system lets low levels exploit the skills of a high level smith/crafter/herblorist when they couldn’t before!

Truth #1: It has always been possible to do this.

Nothing has really changed except how it is done. Consider two scenarios:

  1. Player A has level 51 Herblore. He trades 10 snapdragons, 10 water-filled vials and 10 red spider eggs to Player B, who has level 79 Herblore. Player B makes 10 super restore potions and trades them back to Player A.

  2. Player A requests assistance from Player B, who accepts. Player A borrows Player B’s Herblore skill to make the 10 super restore potions. Player A keeps the potions and Player B gets the XP.

What’s the difference here? Absolutely nothing, except that the new system is safer and more convenient.

Myth #2: Removed, no longer relevant due to skill changes.

Myth #3: Removed, no longer relevant due to skill changes.

Myth #4: This is going to make the economy crash!

Truth #4: We hear this after every update, and it’s always hysterical nonsense.

If I had 5 gp for every time I’ve heard this silliness, the economy really would crash! J As we’ve already seen, this update really changes nothing in practical terms about how items are made, so how could it make the economy crash?

Myth #5: Nobody is going to raise levels now because they can get others to get things for them for free!

Truth #5: There’s nothing a low level can do now that they couldn’t before.

People want levels for the sense of accomplishment and so they can do things on their own, and that won’t change.

Myth #6: Now players with low Construction can get gilded altars and other high-level construction rewards.

Truth #6: This is not possible.

Use of the Assist System for Construction is limited to flat-pack furniture items.

Myth #7: PKing will be ruined because of low-level players borrowing Fire Wave and Ice Barrage from high-level mages!

Truth #7: The Assist System cannot be used for combat spells.

Allowing the AS to enhance combat would have been grossly unbalancing, so using it with Magic is severely restricted.

Myth #8: The Assist System will help bots or increase the number of bots in the game.

Truth #8: The Assist System doesn’t give any advantages to bots.

There’s nothing that bots can do with the AS that they couldn’t do without it. In addition, using the AS would make interactions between accounts very easy to trace.

Myth #9: Now I can complete that hard quest I don’t have the levels for, by borrowing someone else’s!

Truth #9: Sorry, but you can’t use it that way. J

Jagex has specifically excluded all quest-related items from use with the Assist System.

Myth #10: You can borrow someone’s fishing / mining / crafting level to get into a guild.

Truth #10: The Assist System doesn’t allow you to enter guilds if you don’t have the required levels.

There was initially a flaw in the update that did allow this to happen, but it was quickly corrected.
