The Godsword - Obtaining Shards and Hilts

You’ll attract a lot of attention if you carry around a godsword these days—it is still quite new, few people have seen them, and they are curious about how the swords work. I try to answer questions when I can, though some of them are difficult to answer simply. For example, people will ask what quest I had to do to get it, or what monster drops it. The answer is more complicated, though, because the godsword cannot be obtained as a single item unless you buy one from other players: is only made from multiple pieces called shards and hilts.

All of the pieces of the godsword can only be obtained from the new god wars dungeon. The dungeon consists of a central area containing lower-level followers of all four gods, plus four areas that are dedicated to each of the gods. Within those areas are special rooms that contain the “bosses” of each god: a general or commander and three sergeants. These higher level monsters are the only ones that can drop pieces of the godsword.

Obtaining Godsword Shards

The godsword blade is made from three shards—Godsword shard 1, Godsword shard 2 and Godsword shard 3—which are shown in Figure 12 (along with a completed blade). These are dropped by all of the high level monsters in the four “boss rooms”. This includes the very high level generals, and also the three somewhat easier minions that each general has for support.

The lower level sergeants are not really that hard to kill, so this is why the shards are so inexpensive. They started out selling for over 10 million each when the god wars dungeon was new, but have dropped continuously and are now worth only around 1 to 2 million each. Since the shards are so cheap, so are godsword blades, which are made from them: they usually sell for around 4 million to 6 million a piece.

Note that all the shards of a given number are the same. You can get a Shard 1 from an Armadyl sergeant, Shard 2 from the Zammy boss and Shard 3 from a Saradomin sergeant and forge them into a godsword blade.

Obtaining Godsword Hilts

In contrast to the shards, the godsword hilts are much more difficult to get, because they are dropped only by the god wars bosses—not their much easier minions. The hilts are illustrated in Figure 13. Each hilt is dropped only by the boss of the corresponding god, as follows:

  • Armadyl Hilt: Kree'arra (Level 580).

  • Bandos Hilt: General Graardor (Level 624).

  • Saradomin Hilt: Commander Zilyana (Level 596).

  • Zamorak Hilt: K’ril Tsutsaroth (Level 650).

As the high combat levels indicate, all four of these monsters are extremely difficult opponents, especially since their bodyguards will also attack simultaneously when you are fighting the bosses. They are all huge (see Figure 14), all hit very high with multiple combat methods, and have special attacks and special immunities. High combat levels, good equipment and smart tactics are required to kill any of them, and usually a group is necessary.

Figure 14: Want a Bandos Hilt? Come Get it...

Here’s General Graardor, the nice little fellow to whom you will have to “speak” if you want to get your hands on a Bandos godsword hilt. Doesn’t he look friendly? (Please note that the equipment I am wearing is not appropriate for actually fighting the boss; I just ran down into the dungeon for this screenshot.)

It is for these reasons that the godsword hilts are so rare and expensive, currently worth around 40 to 130 million each!
