The Godsword - Buying, Selling and Trading Godswords, Shards, Blades and Hilts

As I mentioned in the previous topic, it takes courage, strength and luck to get all the pieces needed to make a godsword. Of the three, only the first two are really under the control of most players, of course—luck can be notoriously fickle in RuneScape. You may find that even after exhaustive effort, you cannot get all the parts you need to make your own godsword.

Fortunately, all of the godswords are tradable, as are the components used to make them. This means that you can still get a godsword of your own even if you can’t get all the pieces yourself, or even if you never set foot in the dungeon at all. Of course, it will cost you… J

There are several different options for buying and selling godswords, hilts, blades and shards, which I’ll explain in the subsections below. Be sure to also check out my coverage of godsword related scams, to ensure that you don’t fall for one when trading!

Godsword Marketplaces

There are two main places where godswords, shards, hilts and blades are traded. The first is on the RuneScape forums, in the Weapons forum. Searching for “godsword”, “hilt” and so forth will yield the threads of people who are buying and selling these items, and of course, you can start your own threads as well.

The other major marketplace is on the members’ trading server, World 2. If you can get into World 2, teleport to Falador and then walk south. The godsword trading area is on and just south of the bridge that leads into the White Knights Castle (Figure 18). You can often find godswords being demonstrated or tested out on the chickens and white knights in this area.

Figure 18: Godsword Trading Area in World 2

Godswords, hilts, blades and shards are bought and sold primarily on the bridge to the White Knights castle just south of the Falador teleport spot in World 2. Here we see two people selling godsword blades; one trying to buy shards 2 and 3; one making a cash+item offer for a Bandos hilt (“b hilt”) and another trying to sell a Bandos godsword (“bgs”) either for cash or a trade involving a Zamorak godsword (“zgs”) plus cash.

In my experience, using the forums is usually easier. Prices tend to be higher on the forums, which means they are better for sellers while buyers may get a better deal in World 2, but even for buyers a transaction is a lot quicker and simpler to arrange on the forums.

As with all buying and selling, the price ends up being a function of how patient the buyer and seller are. There are still relatively few godswords in the game—if you are in a rush to buy you will pay more, and similarly, if you are trying to panic sell you could lose a lot of money.

As a final note, bear in mind that the godsword markets are filled with merchants trying to get deals and then sell for higher prices. Again, ask around and look for multiple offers before buying and selling. Also watch out for price manipulators and misinformed people who will tell you incorrect prices…

Godsword Prices

Most experienced RuneScape players are used to the phenomenon of new items starting out selling for outrageously high prices and then dropping in price over time. Recently, though, there have been some rare, difficult-to-obtain items that have not followed this pattern. Instead, they have started out very high, dropped in price, then stabilized and gone back up. For example, this happened with the dragonfire shield; it started out well over 30 million, dropped below 20 million, and has been slowly creeping back up towards 30 million again. This sometimes occurs when, once the rush of excitement of a new update wears off, fewer people fight the monsters that drop rare items like a draconic visage.

During the first week that the god wars dungeon was released, I watched as the price of the Armadyl, Bandos and Zamorak godswords fell steadily. By the end of that week, the first two ended up below 40 million and the Armadyl dropped below 90. Despite this, I predicted that these items would in fact follow the same pattern as the dragonfire shield, as people got tired of trying for rare hilt drops. So far, it appears that I have been mostly correct: prices have reversed, with the Bandos godsword now over 50 million, the Zamorak at around 45 million and the Armadyl over 100 million.

As for the Saradomin godsword, it’s always been somewhat of an enigma price-wise, because it is exceedingly rare. At first it was almost as cheap as the Bandos, because people didn’t realize what it could do. As more folks learn about its capabilities, this combined with its rarity is causing it to shoot up in price. In fact, as I was writing this report its price went up continuously, and it is now sometimes selling for more than the Armadyl; one person I was in contact with claims to have sold one for 140 million, and says another recently went for even more!

Buying a Complete Godsword

The easiest and quickest way to get a godsword is just to buy one already assembled, complete with blade and hilt. Again, to do this, either find one for sale on the forums or advertise to buy one there, or come to World 2 and announce that you are buying.

How difficult it will be to get a sword depends first on how much you are willing to pay. Getting a deal will take longer than just buying for what someone is offering as a sale price.

The other factor is which godsword you want to buy. The Bandos is the most common and easy to find if you’re willing to pay the going price; the Zamorak godsword is also fairly common. The Armadyl godsword is harder to find, so it could take as long as a day or two to get one unless you offer a princely sum to entice someone who otherwise wouldn’t be selling to let go of one. The Saradomin godsword is currently very hard to find—it could take several days to locate one, even if you are offering a handsome sum.

Also be sure to look for hilts that are being sold, by searching the forums for “hilt” or watching the trading area in World 2. Godsword blades are cheap and plentiful, so if you buy a hilt you have effectively bought the sword. Just make sure you pay less for the hilt by about 5 million or so than you would for a complete godsword.

Buying Godswords By Component: Hilt and Blade or Hilt and Shards

Instead of looking for a complete godsword you could try to buy the pieces. Your choices are to either buy a blade and hilt, or buy the three godsword shards and a hilt.

In either case, I strongly recommend getting the hilt first, because it is by far the most expensive and most difficult to locate part. Once you have a hilt you can decide if you want to buy the shards or a complete blade; I recommend the latter, because sometimes it can seem to take forever to find the last shard you need when you have the other two, as we will discuss just below.

When shopping for a hilt, be sure to keep an eye out for the matching complete sword too. Sometimes you may find a full sword for sale at a price below what a hilt and blade would be separately.

Buying and Selling Shards

If you have one or two of the three shards but not all of them, you have two choices. You can buy the shards that you don’t have and then assemble them into a blade. Alternately, you can sell the shard(s) you already own, and then buy a blade already assembled.

Buying and selling godsword shards can be an exercise in frustration, because it can be difficult to find someone selling the one you need, or someone who needs the one you want to sell. If you are going to buy or sell shards, you will either need to sell cheap, pay a lot to buy, or be patient.

Note that some people try to buy all three shards, make blades and then sell them. If you do this right you get Smithing XP and can make some money as well, but it can take a long time and a lot of work.

Trading Shards for Blades

If you have all three shards but cannot smith a blade yourself, then the easiest solution is to find a trustworthy friend to do it for you. If you don’t have one who’s around, you can try to trade the shard set for a complete blade, either on the forums or in World 2.

Offering the smith a small amount of cash for his or her trouble will make this far easier to do.

Trading Godswords

If you have one type of godsword but want another, you can obviously sell the one you currently own and use the cash towards the purchase of a second sword. Another option is to try to trade your godsword for another, either supplying cash in addition if upgrading to a more expensive model, or asking for cash from the other person if yours is worth more.

To be honest, trading swords is usually more difficult than just selling the one you have and buying another. The reason is that instead of finding one person to buy your sword and another to sell you the one you want, you have to find a single person who wants to do both. Trading is more something you might have a chance to do if the opportunity arises. Before you trade, though, make sure you know the relative values of both godswords.
