Part of the reason why so many RuneScape players fall victim to account and password scams is that they don't understand what the scammers do to trick them, and how they can make themselves safe from it. But even more than that, most people don't even really understand what these scammers are like, what they are after, or what “hacking” really means. So before I get into the details of the dirty tricks that scammers try to use, I want to first help you understand password scamming better in general terms.

I'll begin with a short analysis of the mindset of the typical password scammer, and a discussion of “hacking” as the term is used in RuneScape. I then will provide a brief overview of keyloggers and other malicious software, since many people don't understand the risks they represent. I'll conclude with some information that will hopefully assist you if you do lose your account to a scammer.
