Synopsis of Price and Economic Trends

RuneScape’s economy continues to be quiet... but not in a good way. By this, I mean that there’s really not much happening—there’s been little in the way of significant updates of late—yet the economic indicators continue to look rather poor. The overall global yield index hit 92.8 this week, down another 0.9%, which is the seventh straight week it has declined or remained unchanged. And the downturn was across the board: income went down, costs went up, and both fighters and skillers were affected.

Key item affordability was down 0.2%, which is fairly minor, but again, this reflects a nearly straight downward trend, indicating that prices overall in the economy are rising. Current market indicators suggest an overall annual inflation rate in the game of about 20%.

Looking at a listing of all the reported indexes, I see a big swath of red, with nearly every index down; only a handful bucked the trend. So if it seems like things are getting more expensive and you’re making less profit for your efforts, that may in fact be the case. It is actually possible that the quiet in the game is a partial cause of this phenomenon; with players somewhat bored, more are competing for the same resources and working the same skills.
