TWIRP Combat and Monster Drop Value Indexes Report and Analysis (2008/04/28)

On this page I examine price trends related to RuneScape combat, through a set of affordability and drop value indexes. Combat affordability measures the ability of combatants to get the gear and supplies they need, and is broken down mainly by combat style. Drop value indexes gauge the economic gain from fighting monsters, showing changes in the value of drops of different monster levels and categories of items.

For further information on these indexes, please see TWIRP Combat Affordability and Drop Value Indexes; if you are not familiar with TWIRP at all, please refer to the TWIRP Quick Guide before proceeding.

Combat Affordability Indexes

Food Affordability (TWIRP-C-FOODa): 79.4 -1.9% q
Potion Affordability (TWIRP-C-POTa): 87.4 -1.0% q
Miscellaneous Item Affordability (TWIRP-C-MISCa): 101.2 -1.1% q

Melee Affordability (TWIRP-C-MELa): 87.5 -1.1% q
Ranged Affordability (TWIRP-C-RNGa): 95.0 -0.8% q
Magic Affordability (TWIRP-C-MAGa): 100.3 +2.4% p

The recent trend of dropping affordability is what keeps spelling such trouble for combat indexes. Food and potion prices are on the rise, and chinchompa prices are affecting rangers as well (though most other ammo remains cheap.) Magic was the notable exception, helped by the plunge in blood rune prices due to the new altar.

Monster Drop Value Indexes

Monster Drop Value (Low-Level) [TWIRP-C-DROP(l)]: 98.6 -0.2% q
Monster Drop Value (Mid-Level) [TWIRP-C-DROP(m)]: 98.0 -0.6% q
Monster Drop Value (High-Level) [TWIRP-C-DROP(h)]: 99.3 -0.9% q
Monster Drop Value (Bosses) [TWIRP-C-DROP(b)]: 92.9 unch

Monster Drop Value (TWIRP-C-DROP): 98.2 -0.6% q

Drop values decreased slightly, except for boss drop value, which was helped by the Zamorak godsword’s rise. This is only a small component of that index, though, which is why it didn’t see a big move to the upside.

Monster Drop Value Type Subindexes

Gem Drop Value (TWIRP-C-DROP-GEM): 96.5 -0.1% q
Herb Drop Value (TWIRP-C-DROP-HERB): 147.8 -1.3% q
High-Level Herb Drop Value (TWIRP-C-DROP-HHERB): 111.6 -0.1% q
Herb Seed Drop Value (TWIRP-C-DROP-HSEED): 28.9 -4.4% q
High-Level Herb Seed Drop Value (TWIRP-C-DROP-HHSEED): 67.0 -6.1% qq
Allotment Seed Drop Value (TWIRP-C-DROP-ASEED): 76.2 +0.9% p

After bottoming out at 27.7 on March 17—the lowest value of any TWIRP index by far—it appeared that herb seed drop values were going to recover. They did briefly, but have now resumed their downward slide. High level herb seeds recovered faster but are now dropping faster as well.
