“Spot Piling” in No Movement Duels

I suppose this last trick really isn't a “scam” per se, but rather something that you need to watch out for if you are not an experienced dueler. Unless you're careful, some duelers can use a combination of circumstances to make it very difficult for you to have a fair fight.

The problem stems from the fact that a player who is dueling can stand in the same spot as other players who are in different duels. And in fact, the game may sometimes start you off in the Duel Arena with you or your opponent “on top of” somebody else. Of course, normally you can just move if you are on top of someone, and your opponent will usually be forced to do the same. However, if you enter a duel that has “No Movement” enabled, then you and your opponent may spawn on top of several other players and be stuck there for the whole fight.

Now, anyone who has done a good deal of combat in RuneScape knows just how confusing this can be:

  • It's often difficult to tell your health bar (or your opponent's) apart from those of others;

  • It's hard to tell what protection prayers, if any, your opponent is using.

  • I've even had problems where I didn't pay all that much attention to the name of my opponent and then suddenly had to figure out who they were from among a big “spot pile” of players.

Don't underestimate this issue, especially if you are dueling on one of the dueling worlds like World 22—in those places, “spot piling” is commonplace. If your opponent is experienced, he's used to dealing with this, so any confusion or delay on your part can result in you losing the duel.
