Secondary Herblore Ingredients

Secondary ingredients are resources that are added to unfinished potions to complete them. There are currently about two dozen different secondary ingredients, which are sometimes simply called seconds for short. Unlike herbs, which come mainly from monster drops and Farming, seconds have a variety of sources, depending on their type: monster drops, Farming, output from other skills, spawns and even minigames.

Grinding and Other Forms of Processing

There are currently ten secondary ingredients that must be processed from the form in which they are originally found before they can be used in potions. Of these, eight are processed by grinding them, which is accomplished by using the ingredient with a pestle and mortar.

Table 18 shows a list of the ingredients that must be processed, along with the original item and how it is transformed. I discuss efficient means of processing seconds in the section on efficient potion making.

Secondary Ingredients Table

Table 19 contains a list of all of the secondary ingredients in Herblore, and the potions in which each is used. They are sorted alphabetically, and for each I also specify the most important ways that each is obtained, so you have an idea of where each comes from.

Here are a few important notes to keep in mind with regard to the table:

  • There are a couple of special potions that actually use herbs as both their primary and secondary ingredients: Relicym’s balm and Guthix rest tea. Despite these exceptions, I do not consider herbs as seconds and they aren’t listed here.

  • The sources shown for items that must be processed (chocolate dust, gorak claw powder, etc.) are for getting the original item.

  • I only show important sources for each item, not every way in which they can be acquired. For example, you can get snape grass and unicorn horn dust as monster drops, but not reliable.

Note that there is an extensive section later in the guide that covers methods for obtaining secondary ingredients.
