Regular Potions (Including Poisons)

Regular potions are the mainstream potions with which most people are familiar; examples include strength potions, antipoisons, prayer potions, super energy potions and Saradomin brews. I call these “regular” only to differentiate them from specialty and quest-related potions. They comprise the majority of all products that exist in the Herblore skill, as well as the vast majority of the volume of all potions made, so you’ll become quite familiar with them as you train the skill.

General Information on Regular Potions

Regular potions follow a fairly standard pattern when it comes to production. Each begins with a base of either water or coconut milk, to which an herb (or non-herb primary ingredient) is added to yield an unfinished potion. A single secondary ingredient is then added to the unfinished potion to yield a final product. These potions generally have three doses when made, the exceptions being extra strength and super strength antipoison potions (which have four doses), and the three strengths of weapon poison (which have just one).

Regular potions give an amount of Herblore experience that ranges from 25 XP for the level 3 attack potion, all the way up to 190 XP for the level 82 super weapon poison. Note that for these potions, all of the XP is given when you add the secondary ingredient; this has important implications for the role of unfinished potions in the skill.

Potion Categories

Potions are made and used for the effects they provide, which can be very beneficial to players in a number of circumstances. They can be divided into five categories based on their general function, as shown in Table 20.

Description

Potions

Stat Boosters

Boost skill levels by an amount that depends on the player’s normal level in the skill; they can both increase the stat when it has been artificially lowered, and also raise it over its normal maximum. Most are associated with combat skills.

Attack, Strength, Defence, Agility, Combat, Super attack, Fishing, Hunter, Super strength, Super defence, Ranging, Magic

Stat Restorers

Restore lost levels or used up points in one or more skills; cannot raise skill above normal maximum.

Restore, Energy, Prayer, Summoning, Super energy, Super restore

Cures and Immunities

Cure ailments and/or provide immunity to various attacks or effects.

Antipoison, Super antipoison, Extra strong antipoison, Antifire, Super strong antipoison

Tradeoff Boosters

Boost some skills but lower others; they are often used with stat restorers to counter the negative effects.

Zamorak brew, Saradomin brew

Poisons

Used with certain melee weapons or ranged ammunition to poison them; these do extra damage when the poison is activated upon a successful attack.

Weapon poison, Extra strong weapon poison, Super strong weapon poison

Understanding Stat Boosters

Some stat boosts are “flat”, meaning that you get the same bonus regardless of your normal level, while others are proportional to your level. For example, a Magic potion always gives a 4 point bonus, while a ranging potion gives 4 to 13 points. The bonus for most variable potions seems to be calculated by taking a percentage of the skill’s maximum, rounding down and then adding a flat bonus number. For the ranging potion, it is 10% of the player’s Ranged level, rounded down, plus 4.

Stat boosting potions do not “stack”—this means that they are not cumulative. Thus, you get no benefit from drinking two doses of a super attack potion one after the other. Similarly, if you drink a regular attack and a super attack potion, you get only the effect of the better potion (the super attack). Most of these also do not stack with other items that provide bonuses; for example, an admiral pie gives +5 Fishing and a fishing potion gives +3, but taking both yields +5, not +8.

Finally, all stat boosts that result from potions are temporary; the raised levels will slowly return to normal at the standard rate of one point per minute. This is the same as the normal restore rate for skills that have been reduced. For example, if your normal attack level is 70 and it is raised to 80 via an attack potion, it will become 79 after a minute, then 78, and so forth, until returning to 70 after a total of about 10 minutes.

Potion Effects

Here’s a brief description of each potion, so you understand more about what you’re making in Herblore and how the items are used. I’ve tried to keep the simple potions simple, but added extra notes where appropriate:

  • Attack Potion (Level 3): Provides a boost of 3 to 12 points to the Attack skill, depending on your Attack level. This appears to work by taking 10% of your Attack level and rounding down, then adding 3.

  • Antipoison Potion (Level 5): This potion removes any poison that is affecting you, and grants very short temporary immunity: about one minute. It is most useful in situations where you are poisoned infrequently.

  • Strength Potion (Level 12): Provides a boost of 3 to 12 points to the Strength skill, depending on your Strength level. This appears to be computed as 10% of your Strength level, rounded down, plus 3.

  • Stat Restore Potion (Level 22): Restores most combat stats (Attack, Defence, Magic, Ranged and Strength) by 10 to 39 points. You can take multiple doses if one does not restore all stats fully to their normal levels. This will not raise stats above their maximums.

  • Energy Potion (Level 26): Restores 10% of your run energy. Note that this means that 10% is added to the number, not that you get 10% of your current level; if you are at 60% run energy, for example, it goes to 70%, not 66%.

  • Defence Potion (Level 30): Boosts Defence by 3 to 12 points, depending on your Defence level; as with the attack and strength potions, it appears to be 10% of your Defence level, rounded down, plus 3.

  • Agility Potion (Level 34): Provides a flat +3 bonus to Agility.

  • Combat Potion (Level 36): Combines the effects of a regular attack and regular strength potion, boosting both Attack and Defence by 3 to 12 points.

  • Prayer Potion (Level 38): Restores from 7 to 31 Prayer points, up to the skill’s normal maximum level. The number of points restored appears to be calculated by taking 25% of your normal level and rounding down, then adding 7. So, at level 65 that would be 16.25, rounded down to 16 plus 7 which is 23 prayer points restored. Note that you get an extra 1 or 2 points if you have a holy wrench (reward from Rum Deal quest) in your inventory.

  • Summoning Potion (Level 40): Restores 7 to 31 Summoning points, using the same formulas as the prayer potion, but based on your Summoning level instead. There is no bonus here from the holy wrench.

  • Super Attack Potion (Level 45): Boosts Attack level by 5 to 19 points, which appears to be computed as 15% of your Attack level rounded down, plus 5.

  • Super Antipoison Potion (Level 48): Cures poison affecting you and provides immunity from poison for six minutes.

  • Fishing Potion (Level 50): Provides a flat +3 boost to the Fishing skill.

  • Super Energy Potion (Level 52): Restores 20% of your run energy; the same comments apply as for the regular energy potion.

  • Hunter Potion (Level 53): Provides a +3 boost to Hunter.

  • Super Strength Potion (Level 55): Boosts your Strength level by 5 to 19 points, which is computed as 15% of your Strength level, rounded down, plus 5.

  • Weapon poison (Level 60): Coats one dagger or spear, or up to 5 arrows, darts, knives, javelins or bolts, with a mild poison that begins at 2 damage and slowly wears off.

  • Super Restore Potion (Level 63): Restores 8 to 32 points in all stats except Hitpoints and Summoning; this includes Prayer. Calculated as 25% of the normal level of each skill, rounded down, plus 8. Cannot raise any stat above its normal maximum.

  • Super Defence Potion (Level 66): Increases Defence level by 5 to 19 points, based on 15% of your Defence level, rounded down, plus 5.

  • Extra Strong Antipoison Potion (Level 68): Cures poison and provides immunity for (I believe) 12 minutes.

  • Antifire Potion (level 69): Provides resistance to dragon fire for six minutes. When combined with wearing an anti-dragon or dragonfire shield, this potion grants complete immunity to dragon fire breath weapons for six minutes. Beware that it does not replace the shield, and does not work nearly as well without it!

  • Ranging Potion (Level 72): Provides a variable boost of 4 to 13 points to the Ranging skill, calculated as 10% of your level, rounded down, plus 4.

  • Extra Strong Weapon Poison (Level 73): Treats one dagger or spear, or up to 5 arrows, darts, knives, javelins or bolts, with a moderate strength poison that begins at 3 damage (for ammunition) or 4 damage (for melee weapons) and slowly wears off.

  • Magic Potion (Level 76): Gives a flat +4 bonus to Magic.

  • Zamorak Brew (Level 78): An offensive tradeoff potion that boosts Attack by 2 to 21 points and Strength by 2 to 13 points, while reducing Defence by 2 to 11 points and Hitpoints by 2 to 11 points. Note that all of these are based on the skill’s normal level except Hitpoints, which is based on current HP; thus, if your normal Hitpoints level is 90 but you are down to 5 HP, a Zamorak brew will not kill you. There also seems to be a bit of randomness at play here—“chaos”, dare I say? J—in that you don’t always take the same amount of damage even when you have a constant number of Hitpoints.

Zamorak brews also restore Prayer points, in an amount equal to 10% of your Prayer level, rounded down. This is not widely known, and is not even mentioned in the RuneScape knowledge base.

  • Super Strong Antipoison Potion (Level 79): Cures poison and provides immunity for (I believe) 24 minutes.

  • Saradomin Brew (Level 81): This is a defensive tradeoff potion, and the complement of the Zamorak brew. It boosts Defence by 2 to 21 points and Hitpoints by 2 to 16 points, while dropping Attack, Strength, Magic and Ranged by 2 to 9 points each. It does not restore Prayer points.

  • Super Strong Weapon Poison (Level 82): Poisons one dagger or spear, or up to 5 arrows, darts, knives, javelins or bolts, with a high strength poison that begins at 4 damage (for ammunition) or 6 damage (for melee weapons) and slowly wears off over time.
