Overview of Vinesweeper

The setup of Vinesweeper is simple enough: the farm of the gnomish couple Mr. and Mrs. Winkin has a problem with rabbits eating up its seeds, and to make matters worse, the farmhands have forgotten where the seeds are! Your job is to help them find the seeds by using information provided by the game itself to guide you to their locations.

Each time you dig a hole where there is no seed, a rotating number appears telling you how many seeds are adjacent to that spot. By analyzing the patterns of these numbers, you figure out where the seeds are and mark them with flags. In return, you are given a number of points, which you can trade in for various rewards. This is also a multiplayer game, and as long as you are actively participating, you even earn points when players around you find seeds!

Of course, the game wouldn’t be any fun if it were too easy, and so there are some challenges to contend with. These include rabbits that try to eat the seeds and destroy your flags, and the fact that the indicator numbers get reset when a flag is cleared. You will have to carefully plan when to set your flags, and feed the rabbits special ogleroots to occupy them so they stay out of your way.

What’s particularly nice about Vinesweeper is that the game has been designed to integrate well into the rest of the Farming skill. You can be teleported to the farm by (almost) any Farming leprechaun, where you can play it while your crops grow, and then return back to harvest and replant.

You do not get Farming XP for playing the game, but have the option to trade Vinesweeper points for XP. The amount you get is not huge, but will certainly help those looking to level up the skill. Alternately, you can trade the points for seeds and even the hard-to-find compost potion (which turns up to 60 buckets of compost into supercompost.) While some of these seeds are rather mundane, others are quite good (like ranarrs, yews and palms). This minigame is also the only way to be able to predictably be able to get a spirit tree seed (as opposed to hoping for good luck when cutting wood or using the Kingdom of Miscellania.)

Another nice aspect of Vinesweeper is that the number of points you can get in a period of time is not just based on your Farming level, but also on how good you are at the game—so when you improve, you will get more points. There are different strategies that you can employ, some of which pay off more in terms of points per hour, while others are more fun for puzzle solvers. As you play you will also learn how to recognize common patterns that tell you where seeds are located. This minigame guide will tell you all about these patterns, and strategies you can use to get the most possible points out of every minute you spend on the Winkin farm.
