Other Herblore Recommendations

Moving beyond skill levels and quests, there are a few other areas of the game where some preparation can be quite helpful in training your Herblore skill. Many of these are minigames or similar features. Let’s take a look at them.

Barbarian Training

If you are interested in making barbarian mix potions, then you will need to complete at least part of the barbarian training feature (miniquest, whatever it is!) To do so, you must visit Otto Godblessed, who can instruct you in the barbarian versions of several skills: Firemaking, Fishing, Herblore and Smithing. He is located in a small house near the pool of water above Baxtorian Falls.

Note that you will need at least level 15 Agility and Strength and level 48 Fishing, as mentioned under skill recommendations.

Here are the steps to getting this aspect of the training done quickly:

  1. Withdraw from the bank a knife, either 10 fishing bait or 10 feathers, and a 2-dose regular attack potion. Note that you can use a 4-dose attack potion on an empty vial to split it.

  2. Use a games necklace to teleport to Barbarian Outpost, then run south and around the western shore of the pond that contains the whirlpool (used to enter the Ancient Cavern where mithril dragons live). Otto’s house is at the southwest edge of the body of water there.

  3. Speak to Otto and start on barbarian pole fishing. The pole is under his bed. Catch a fish and then return to Otto to complete this part of the task.

  4. Ask Otto to start the barbarian herblore portion of the training.

  5. Use the knife on the fish to hopefully get either roe or caviar. If you don’t get any, fish some more and cut it open until you get one.

  6. Use the roe or caviar on the 2-dose attack pot and give the resulting attack mix (2) to Otto. Done!

I describe barbarian potions in more detail in their own topic.

Stronghold of Player Safety

This feature is worth doing both for the reminders on safe gameplay and the rewards, but the real attraction for herblorists is the cockroach drone monsters in the dungeon. These are good herb droppers, and are particularly easy to kill for low-level players.

Tarn’s Lair

This minigame is rather challenging, but one of its rewards is a book that enhances the Salve amulet, making its bonus +20% Attack and Strength against undead instead of +15%. This is handy for fighting aberrant spectres and banshees, both excellent herb droppers.

Temple Trekking / Burgh de Rott Ramble

If you want to get your own nail beast nails to make Sanfew serum—rather than buying them—they can only be obtained from nail beasts encountered during these twin minigames.

Fist of Guthix

Earning points in the Fist of Guthix minigame allows you to earn one of four sets of special gloves that greatly increase the drop rate of certain herbs.

Money

Well, I kinda had to bring this one up. J While it is certainly possible to train Herblore without spending any money, it is much easier and more efficient when you have a bit of cash at your disposal. Even if you do not plan to powerlevel the skill, you will still want to have some gold available for the following:

  • Buying vials or water-filled vials, unless you plan to make them yourself (most people do not).

  • Purchasing secondary ingredients that are cheap and generally obtained through pointless gruntwork.

  • Obtaining ingredients that you are unable to get yourself because you do not meet the requirements. Examples would include coconuts, kebbit teeth and crushed nests.

  • Buying herbs opportunistically. Since the advent of the Grand Exchange, herb prices seem to go in cycles, and by watching the market you can sometimes get very good deals on herbs.

Again, you don’t need a ton of cash, but a little helps. For new players, I’d say around 250k to spend on the skill would be very useful. Higher-level players will benefit from having more—at least 1M.
