Mithril Dragon Guide - Common, Uncommon, Rare and Special Drops

My discussions of mith dragon requirements and combat abilities might have mostly scared off potential mith dragon slayers, what with all my talk of expensive equipment, food and potions, and the strong attacks and high defence of the monsters. But never fear, there are ways to conquer all of that! And now, I’m going to dangle a plum in front of you by describing some of the goodies you can expect to get when you kill these beasties.

The next three subsections list the very common and common drops of mith dragons, the uncommon and rare drops, and the special ones as well. Hopefully this will whet your appetite. J Note that I consider common drops to be ones you are likely to see at least once after 20 or so kills; uncommon drops are seen perhaps 1 in 50 kills, and rare drops are those I have seen less than 1 time in 100 kills (sometimes a lot less.) A special drop is a rare drop that is unique to the monster or to a small set of monsters of which this is one.

100%, Very Common and Common Drops

All mithril dragons drop three mithril bars and dragon bones when they die. I always keep the bars and try to keep the bones, burying them on the spot only if out of inventory space. Saving and banking the bars is key to fighting mith dragons without losing millions on supplies, since the bars currently represent around 5,000 worth of drops per kill, which is a big percentage of the potion/food/bolt cost of fighting them. See Figure 336 for some examples of typical drops from a couple of trips to the mith dragons.

Figure 336: Typical Mithril Dragon Drops

Here are two inventories after completing a 5-kill and 4-kill run. On the left: 15 mithril bars, 5 dragon bones, 10 soul runes, 1200 coins and 27 bloods (one drop here was “nothing”.) On the right, better luck: 12 mith bars, 4 dragon bones, 27 bloods, 2 rune battleaxes and an ancient page.

In Table 67 I have listed the very common and common drops of mith dragons, listed roughly in order of increasing value. Those values are based roughly on current market prices, or alch values for items a high-level normally wouldn’t bother to sell (for example, the dozens of rune battleaxes, spears and maces I have received from killing miths). I have added comments where appropriate.

Table 67: Very Common and Common Mithril Dragon Drops

Drop

Approximate Value

Frequency

Notes

Coins (600)

600

Very common

They do not appear to drop fewer than 600 coins.

Coins (876)

876

Very common

The only other coin drops are 600 and 3,000 (which is rare).

Shark

1,000

Very common

Can be either by itself or in addition to certain other drops. A drop of 6 sharks is possible but uncommon (see Table 68).

Super attack mix (2)

1,500

Common

Rune javelins (8)

2,400

Very common

Super defence mix (2)

2,500

Common

Rune arrows (8)

3,200

Common

Rarely they drop 42 at a time as well.

Super strength mix (2)

3,500

Common

Soul runes (10)

4,000

Common

Best soul rune dropper in game that I have found.

Prayer mix (2)

6,000

Common

Rune mace

8,640

Common

Rune spear

12,480

Common

Blood runes (27)

13,500

Very common

Mith dragons are arguably the best blood rune dropper in the game—they leave these behind surprisingly often. In fact, at least once I’ve gotten blood rune drops three times in a single trip where I killed five dragons.

Rune dart (p) (14)

14,000

Common

Rune full helm

21,120

Common

Rune knife (8)

24,000

Common

Best rune knife dropper in the game.

Rune battleaxe

24,960

Very common

Like the blood runes, this is a surprisingly common drop for these monsters; I seem to get one at least 1 in 10 kills. Even nicer, they often also comes with a “bonus shark”.

Runite bolts (10 to 21)

16,000 to 34,000

Common

A valuable and fairly common drop.

Runite bars (2)

30,000

Common

Easily the best runite bar dropping monster in RuneScape. Note that some have reported that they drop 1 or 2, but it’s always been 2 for me (several dozen times.)

Again, mithril dragons will fairly often give a “bonus shark” in addition to a regular drop. This can be quite handy if you are running low on food while fighting them!

Uncommon and Rare Drops

Table 68 lists some of the less common and truly rare drops of the mithril dragons. It is sorted roughly in increasing value order, like Table 67, and again I have added comments as appropriate.

Some of the items listed in this table are based on reports from other players or websites, and represent drops I have not obtained myself. They are noted accordingly; if you have definitely had any of the rare drops that I am unsure about, please let me know. I have also listed the special drops here, which are discussed in more detail in the next subsection.

Uncommon

See notes under “Special Drops”.

Chewed bones

Uncommon

See notes under “Special Drops”.

Clue scroll (level 3)

? Varies

Uncommon

Probably the best monster for dropping clues that I have encountered. Note that a clue scroll will appear in addition to a “regular” drop.

Uncut sapphire

500

Uncommon

Mith dragons are not frequent gem droppers.

Uncut emerald

1,000

Uncommon

Uncut ruby

2,500

Uncommon

Coins (3,000)

3,000

Rare

If I recall correctly, I’ve gotten this drop exactly once.

Uncut diamond

5,000

Uncommon

Shark (6)

6,000

Uncommon

A single shark is a more common drop, and may even accompany another item.

Rune medium helm

11,520

Very rare

I’ve never had this and the full helm is a fairly common drop, so this may be a mistake.

Law runes (45)

15,000

Very rare

Claimed by an online fan site; never have had this drop personally.

Rune arrows (42)

17,000

Rare

Once in several hundred kills; 8 rune arrows is common.

Nature runes (67)

20,000

Very rare

I’ve never had this drop but I know someone who has.

Half key (teeth or loop)

20,000 to 30,000

Uncommon

Fairly rare since they don’t drop gems often either.

Silver ore (100)

35,000

Very rare

This is about as rare as it is for abyssal demons…

Rune 2h sword

40,000

Very rare

Another item I have never had as a drop, may or may not be legit.

Rune kiteshield

45,000

Very rare

If they really drop this it is very rare as I’ve never had it.

Dragon spear

120,000

Extremely rare

Never had this as a drop from a mithril dragon but I did get one from a brutal green dragon in the same cavern so it seems likely that miths drop it.

Dragon square shield left half

200,000

Extremely rare

Never had this as a drop (from any monster! J)

Dragon medium helm

300,000

Extremely rare

Never had this as a drop.

Draconic visage

23,000,000+

Extremely rare

I’m still trying to get one after all these weeks. J See notes under “Special Drops”.

Dragon full helm

40,000,000+

Extremely rare

The Big Prize of mithril dragons. See notes under “Special Drops”.

Special Drops

The mithril dragons have four drops that I consider special, because they are either unique to the mithril dragons, or the miths are one of the few ways to get them. Here’s a bit more about the four:

  • Ancient Pages: These pages go into the special journal that Otto Godblessed gives you during Barbarian Training. They provide part of the back story of the Ancient Cavern, though the journal has no other specific use at this time. Clicking on a page will transcribe it to your journal; it then disappears. These pages can only be obtained as random mith dragon drops or by searching the corpses in the cavern (a very slow and tedious process.)

Oddly—though quite conveniently—you can even do this while in the cavern, even if the journal is back in your bank. Be sure to take advantage of this to save on inventory space.

  • Chewed Bones: These bones are the key item in the Barbarian Training pyre boat minigame, and are only obtainable as mith dragon drops. Bring one or more sets of these bones, a tinderbox, woodcutting hatchet and logs to one of the pyre sites around Otto’s lake and you can burn the bones. You receive a random item reward, which can in theory be as good as a dragon full helm but often is a rather low-value item (and may be complete junk like 5 silver bolts). You are also “blessed” in your future prayer training, which means you get triple the normal prayer XP for burying bones. You also get some Crafting and Firemaking XP for your trouble. See Figure 337 if you want to know what burning a pyre boat looks like.

I recommend using at least mahogany or yew logs for pyring chewed bones, as this gives you the prayer boost for 4 bones. (Magic logs give 5 but they are more valuable and require very high levels.) This bonus “stacks”—for example, if you do it ten times with yew logs your next 40 bone buryings are triple XP. Don’t waste this in a bank on bones you could take to a gilded altar; take advantage of it in a place like the iron/steel dragon lair where you normally bury bones.

Figure 337: Burning Chewed Bones in a Barbarian Pyre Boat

To make and burn a pyre boat you need chewed bones, a woodcutting axe, logs and a tinderbox (or bow). In the first frame here you can see me building the pyre boat from the logs (which is automatic). In the second, the “barbarian spirit” rises to his “afterlife” and I am given 20 addy knives as a reward.

  • Draconic Visage: The core component of the very useful dragonfire shield, the draconic visage is dropped by mithril, steel, iron and black dragons, plus the King Black Dragon. In theory, miths should drop them more frequently than the others since they are the toughest dragon in the game, but you sure wouldn’t know it from my luck! J

  • Dragon Full Helmet: The “signature” drop of the mithril dragon, this item is very rare and still very expensive a month after it came out. Like most drops, it comes down to luck; some people get one after a few dozen kills, others don’t even after several thousand!

Note that mith dragons are also frequent clue scroll droppers (level 3). These scrolls appear in addition to another drop. Also, as mentioned before, sometimes miths will toss in a “bonus shark” on top of another drop.
