Mithril Dragon Guide - Basic Melee Technique with Protection from Melee

Ranging the mith dragons is really the best method, but melee is an alternative if you either have a low Ranged level or want to try to kill them without using up pricy enchanted ruby and diamond bolts. This is the simplest melee method, using equipment with high mage defence and protection from melee to minimize the damage from the dragons. It is slower than ranging but can be more cost effective.

If you want to melee, you should also look at the advanced technique that uses the Piety prayer to speed up killing (at the cost of a higher expense per kill in potions in food.)

Here’s a summary of the key information about this technique:

  • Technique: Basic Melee with Protection from Melee

  • Risk Level: Moderate to High. Fairly safe if done right; fairly high chance of death if you lag out for a long period of time.

  • Risk Level Relative to Other Techniques: Fairly Low. This is almost as safe as the basic ranging method; it’s a bit more dangerous because it takes longer.

  • Kills Per Trip: Usually 4.

  • Kills Per Hour: Approximately 13 to 15.

  • Cost Per Kill: Approximately 6k to 8k.

Note that the estimates above are based on using the recommended equipment and skills of about the following levels: 95 Attack; 95 Strength; 95 Defence; 97 Hitpoints; 94 Mage; and 80 Prayer.

Equipment

The primary goal of the equipment in this setup is to maximize mage defence; the secondary goal is to improve prayer duration. Table 71 and Figure 346 show my recommendations.

Notes

Head

Helm of Neitiznot

God mitre; infinity hat; mystic hat

The Neitiznot helm provides +3 to each of magic defence, prayer and strength, so it is the best helm for this method. Otherwise go for prayer bonus or magic defence.

Cloak

Trimmed skill cape

Untrimmed skill cape; god cape; god cloak

The skill cape’s defence and prayer bonuses are most helpful here. If you do not have one (like me) then use a god cape for magic defence or a god cloak for prayer bonus.

Neck

Amulet of fury

Amulet of glory, God stole

The all-purpose winner for every method.

Quiver

--

--

Weapon

Dragon longsword

Abyssal whip; dragon mace; dragon dagger; dragon battleaxe

See the discussion “Choosing a Melee Weapon” on my page covering challenges and strategy.

Body

Karil’s top

Black dhide top

Karil’s provides much more mage defence. Be sure to check its repair status occasionally.

Shield

Anti-dragon shield or Dragonfire shield

--

The dragonfire shield is definitely helpful here, with its extra magic defence and +7 strength. It is not really necessary, however.

Legs

Karil’s skirt

Black dhide legs

Again, choose Karil’s for its magic defence.

Hands

“Barrows” gloves

Black dhide vambraces

These are the best hand items for meleeing.

Feet

Infinity boots

Mystic boots

Use these for magic defence.

Ring

Ring of wealth

Warrior ring, Berzerker ring, Ring of life

None of the rings really make a big difference in kill speed for this method, so I prefer the extra chance of a rare drop. If using a whip, the warrior ring gives +4 slash attack. The berzerker ring is an option for its strength bonus, though I consider it minor. The ring of life provides insurance against lagging.

Figure 346: Equipment and Inventory Items for the Mithril Dragon Basic Melee Technique

This diagram shows you my recommended equipment, food, potions and other items when doing basic meleeing. Note the high magic defence and only moderate melee defence figures.

Inventory Items

My recommended inventory items for straight meleeing can be found in Table 72 and Figure 346.

Notes

Exit cavern, emergency teleport

Home teleport tablets

Other teleport tablets, Ectophial, Elf crystal

I strongly recommend you bring house tablets. They make it easier to recharge your prayer after a run and get back to a bank, and also let you escape fast if you fall behind on food or lag. They stack so bring several to save time between trips.

Access to cavern

Games necklace

Use Grand Tree and replace with food

For more information, see the section “Getting to the Ancient Cavern” in the discussion of mith dragon lair location and access.

Firebreath protection

Antifire mix (2)

Antifire potion (2, 3 or 4)

You generally need only 2 doses so a mix is best for the extra healing.

Attack boost

Super attack (4)

--

Mandatory to cut down kill time. I do not take with a super strength, as a few points of strength doesn’t make much difference, and the pots are expensive; I just quaff one before I leave. You can of course substitute a super strength mix (2) for a piece of food if you wish.

Prayer restore

3 Prayer mix (2)

2 Prayer pot (4) plus 1 food

I usually need 6 prayer potion doses, and again prefer the mixes for the healing bonus.

Healing

1 Shark + 12 Lobster + 8 Monkfish

(Many alternatives)

As with the other methods, the amount of food you need depends on your skill levels and equipment, and your comfort level with trying to save money using cheaper food. A mix of lobster and monkfish works for me; the shark is an extra “for emergencies”, as sometimes the dragons can hit unexpectedly hard.

You will also use the following items at the bank:

  • One dose of antifire potion

  • One dose of Saradomin brew

  • One dose of regular restore potion

  • One dose of super strength potion.

And finally, some cheap food to heal up between runs.

Preparation

Do the following to get yourself ready for the first trip or between trips:

  1. Use cheap food (trout, salmon, cakes, etc.) to heal up completely.

  2. Put on or check all your equipment to make sure it is correct.

  3. Take out more teleport tablets from the bank, if necessary.

  4. Take out all of the inventory items except for the food.

  5. Take out an extra antifire pot, Saradomin brew, regular restore and super strength potion. Take a sip of each in that order. This will ensure you have a few minutes firebreath protection at the start, will boost your defence and give you a hitpoint bonus, and bump up your strength as well, which should last for most of the trip. Then put the pots back in.

  6. Take out all the food you are going to use.
Method

Once you enter the cavern, drink the first dose of super attack potion. Put on protection from melee before going downstairs to where the brutal greens are. Run past them and up to the mith dragon stairs.

Choose a dragon to fight following the order of preference I described earlier, and simply melee it until it is dead (. While fighting, pay attention to the following:

  • Attack Level: In general, you’ll take another sip of your super attack potion before each dragon. If you are getting stuck near the end of a dragon and your Attack level has dropped to more than 3 or 4 below its potted maximum, take a sip early.

  • Prayer Level: Watch your Prayer level carefully; since you are protecting from melee with low melee defence, if it runs out you are in trouble. Take a sip of prayer mix when needed, though this can usually be done between kills. Try to take it when you are down more than 6 HP to take advantage of the mix aspect.

  • Hitpoints Level: Keep your health above 75% if at all possible; there is no advantage here to letting it drop.

  • Firebreath: If you find you are taking damage from firebreath and no longer see the “Your potion protects you from the heat of the dragon’s breath!” message, take a shot of antifire potion.

After you finish a kill, turn off your prayer while the dragon is dying, then pick up drops. Take a drink of super attack if you haven’t recently, check your prayer and eat/pot as necessary.

Ending the Trip

You will generally leave the lair after four kills. However, if you find yourself low on food and prayer after three, leave early: don’t risk losing your valuable equipment unnecessarily. Remember that unlike the ranging method, you cannot count on finishing off a dragon if you run out of prayer, even if it is near death—wearing ranging gear, the dragon will hit you hard without your protection prayer.

To leave, either use your home teleport tablets or cast the level 0 Home Teleport spell (every 30 minutes) to save a tablet. I cast the spell, recharge in the chapel nearby and then use the bank there to restock. By the time you kill four dragons with melee the dragon should no longer be aggressive.

If you are banking at Grand Tree, then use a home tablet, recharge prayer at your altar, then rub an Amulet of Glory that you should have mounted on the wall in your house. Teleport to Al Kharid, run north to the glider and take it to the Grand Tree, and bank there.

Additional Notes and Tips

Here are a few additional notes and tips for success using this method:

  • Use the safe spot when needed, to deal with drops, healing, and so forth.

  • If you get a good drop always pick it up first before doing anything else, like drinking potions or burying bones—people lose drops to randoms.

  • If your health is full and you need more inventory space for drops, temporarily drop some food near where you will stand during the next fight. Then pick it up as needed when you get hit. Watch out for food thieves, though there are few “noobs” left in the mith lair these days.

  • If you aren’t in a safe spot and aren’t sure you will be done dealing with drops before the dragon respawns, put protection from melee on so you don’t get hit with a cheap shot.
