Making Herb Tars

Herb tars are made in a very different way than the rest of the products of Herblore, since they are not potions. Fortunately, they are different in a good way: it turns out that herb tars are actually the easiest items to make in the skill. This is because they only use two products, one of which stacks, and they have a nice “Make X” feature.

To start, go to a one-click bank as usual, and empty your inventory. Then get out a pestle and mortar, which will go into upper left corner slot of your inventory. Next, withdraw a stack of swamp tar (not swamp paste, which won’t work); it will go into the slot next to the tar.

Now you’re ready to actually make the herb tar:

  1. Choose the herb you want to use—clean guam, marrentill, tarromin or harralander—and then right-click it and choose “Withdraw All” to take out 26 herbs.

  2. Click the swamp tar and then the herb next to it, and tell the game to “Make All”. The game will do the work for you (Figure 161).

  3. When everything is done, you will have 390 herb tars. Put them into the bank, withdraw more herbs and repeat the process.

That’s it! It’s very easy, and also pretty fast: it takes close to exactly one minute to make 390 herb tars, which works out to 23,400 herb tars per hour (1,560 herbs’ worth).

One reason why harralander tar is an attractive training option is that it is very easy and pretty decent XP.

Some players prefer not to bank the herb tar after each load, just letting it stack up in their inventory next to the unused swamp tar. This is a bit of a trade-off: it saves you the time needed to bank the completed tar, but on each subsequent load you only make 375 new herb tars (since you only have room for 25 herbs). There’s not much difference either way, so do whichever you prefer.
