Illegal Wilderness Lures and Scams

Of the three main categories of lures in RuneScape, illegal Wilderness lures are arguably the most annoying. These involve scammers who lie, deceive and manipulate people into entering the Wilderness when they originally had no intention of doing so. The lurer then either kills the victim or has an accomplice do the dirty work for him; the lurer and/or accomplice then get the victim's items.

Some of these lures are particularly difficult to describe fully, because the lengths to which the immoral, dishonest scum who pull them off will go to in order to deceive their prey. They may try simple tactics, or concoct elaborate schemes, in their efforts to get their target into harm's way, and it's impossible to list every conceivable story they may come up with. Some will even exploit bugs in the game to get people where they can be killed.

The good news is that on April 18, 2007, Jagex implemented the Wilderness ditch, which has done an excellent job of stopping many illegal Wilderness lures. In fact, some of the lures that I used to describe in this subsection were made completely obsolete by this change; other lures still exist but are only possible if you choose to cross the ditch. I have updated this subsection and moved several pages to the subsection discussing obsolete lures. This includes the former discussion of Wilderness luring hotspots, which are no longer relevant.

Remember: Never cross the ditch unless you want to go into the Wilderness!

Let's take a look at how current Wilderness lures are usually accomplished. I’ll discuss forum trade luring, where people pretend to want to buy or sell items, but actually try to kill the other trade participant; this is much less common now due to the ditch, but is still possible. I’ll describe in-game lures, such as fake drop parties, and explain to you how game bugs can result in you being dragged into the Wilderness against your will. I'll also tell you about the obnoxious group teleport that can send you deep into the Wilderness, from where you will not be able to even teleport out.
