Ice Trolls Cannon Training Guide - Monster Description, Statistics, Attack and Defence

Before we go any further, we should probably pause to take a look at the monsters we’re up against, shouldn’t we? These are the ice trolls, of course, and there are three types. Below you will find a general description of the trolls and their main stats, a discussion of their offensive characteristics, and also of their defences and weaknesses.

General Description and Statistics Summary

The ice trolls are very much like other trolls in the game in appearance, except that they are white in color. They lumber around various areas of both of the Fremennik Isles of Jatizso and Neitiznot, and in several places engage in a never-ending battle with Fremennik guards (this is part of the quest storyline). They are supposed to be larger than humans, I believe (except for the runts) but take up only a single square. Figure 356 shows what they look like.

Figure 356: Ice Troll “Family Portrait”

It took me a while to get one of each type of ice troll lined up for this little family photo, but I finally did it: the female is on the left (notice the distinctive “blonde hair”), the male in the middle and the runt on the right. Notice the token of gratitude that the ice troll female is lobbing in my direction... J

As I just mentioned just above, there are three different types of ice trolls, which are very much alike in most ways, with one exception—the females have a different attack. Here’s a summary of their key statistics:

  • Name: Ice troll female, ice troll male, ice troll runt.

  • Level: 82 (female and male), 74 (runt).

  • Hitpoints: 70 (female and male), 60 (runt).

  • Number of Spawns: Dozens all over the islands; about 15 or so in the area where you will be using your cannon.

  • Respawn Speed: Fast (a few seconds).

  • Aggressive: Yes.

  • Attacks: Melee (male and runt), Ranged (female).

  • Maximum Attack Damage: Melee: 17; Ranged: 6, unless using the special Fremennik shield, in which case it is 2.

  • Immunities: None.

  • Special or Unique Drops: Granite shield. Also one of the few monsters to drop rune warhammers and rune kiteshields with any reasonable frequency.
Offensive Characteristics and Attacks

Taken by themselves in a single combat area, any one of these ice trolls is an easy kill and not worthy of a special method—or a TruthScape Secrets guide. J They do hit rather hard, but attacks from the troll males and runts are negated by protection from melee, and the females by protection from ranged. What makes them both interesting and somewhat challenging is that there are so many of them, and the fact that they will swarm on you like a hive of angry bees once you fire up your cannon.

The male and runt trolls will come after you with a simple club attack; nothing fancy, though it can hit up to 17. Even with fairly high melee defence they will damage you pretty fast, if only because there are so many of them constantly hitting. This is why protection from melee is important.

The females complicate matters with their ranging attack (rock throwing) that will hit constantly no matter what your Ranged defence level is. Obviously, you cannot protect against this if you are protecting from melee due to all the males and runts. The females can do up to 6 damage per hit, and it adds up fast.

The only way to partially negate the females’ attack is to use the special Fremennik round shield that’s made from arctic pine logs, bronze and rope; if you use that shield, the females’ attack hits for a maximum of 2 instead of 6. This is not a matter of the shield providing high defence bonuses or anything—it’s a special item that was introduced during the Fremennik Isles quest specifically as a way to fight ice trolls. I have tried rune kites, granite shields and so forth; no matter how good the shield, the female trolls will hit you up to 6 unless you use the special one.

Note as well that there are two different shields called “Fremennik shield”—you want the one that you learn to make during the Fremennik Isles quest. It is a small, tan-colored shield, and its examine information reads “A wooden shield with a rope rim”, as shown in Figure 357. You do not want the large brown one you can get in Rellekka or as a drop from dagannoths!

Be sure you use this Fremennik shield when fighting ice trolls.

Defensive Characteristics and Weaknesses

The ice trolls do not have any notable defences—in fact, their defence seems to be rather low. They are very easy to damage with melee and ranged attacks, and the cannon cuts through them very quickly and easily.

I have tried various melee weapons and found that the old standby, the abyssal whip, seems to work best for me.
