Ice Trolls Cannon Training Guide - Equipment and Inventory Items

Since ice trolls hit very hard and you will be in a multi-combat area fighting many at once, you will have protection from melee on the entire time. Accordingly, the primary goal of your equipment will be to maximize prayer bonus. Secondary considerations include keeping weight low—since you’ll be running around a fair bit—and also avoiding expensive equipment in case something goes wrong and you die.

Equipment

You can find my equipment recommendations in Table 80; they are illustrated in Figure 360.

Notes

Head

God mitre

Veracs helm, Helm of Neitiznot

The Saradomin, Guthix and Zamorak mitres give +5 Prayer bonus each, the best in the game, and they are not expensive.

Cloak

Trimmed skill cape

God cloak

The trimmed skill cape gives +4 Prayer, so use that if you can. Otherwise a god cloak with its +3 Prayer is a good choice.

Neck

God stole

Holy symbol / Unholy symbol

This is one of the few activities where I do not recommend an amulet of fury. The attack and defence bonuses are of little use, and the amulet only has +5 prayer bonus compared to +10 for a god stole or +8 for a holy/unholy symbol.

Quiver

--

--

Ammo for the cannon stays in your inventory.

Weapon

Abyssal whip

(Whatever you like.)

Your held weapon will be used to “help out” the cannon, so use whatever you feel comfortable with. Must be one-handed; I normally just use a whip. (By the way, I’ve tried a dragon mace for its extra prayer bonus and it didn’t work too well.)

Body

Monk’s robe top

Proselyte hauberk

Monk robes are free, light in weight and provide excellent Prayer bonuses: +6 for the top. The only alternative I’d consider is the proselyte hauberk, for which you must have completed the Slug Menace quest. It has a better Prayer bonus (+8) but weighs much more so it will slow you down. On the other hand, it gives some melee defence too, so if you run out of Prayer points you may last a few seconds longer before the trolls overwhelm you…

Shield

Fremennik shield

--

Mandatory. For an explanation see the section “Offensive Characteristics and Attacks” in the topic describing the ice trolls.

Legs

Monk’s robe bottom

--

The proselyte tasset only gives the same +5 bonus as the monk’s robe bottom and both costs and weighs more, so there’s no point using it here.

Hands

“Barrows” gloves

Other RFD gloves

Use the best gloves from Recipe for Disaster that you can.

Feet

Rune boots

Climbing boots

Rune boots give good defence and +2 strength. Climbing boots are a cheaper alternative that also give +2 strength.

Ring

Ring of wealth

Ring of life

I use the ring of wealth because there’s no need for stat-boosting rings like the warrior ring here (though you can certainly use one if you like). If you are new to this method you can also consider a ring of life, which has a good chance of saving you if you make a mistake.

Figure 360: Equipment and Inventory Items for Cannon Training on Ice Trolls

This figure shows you my recommended equipment and inventory items; see the text for a full discussion. Note the +29 Prayer bonus, which lets prayer points drain very slowly. Defence bonuses are extremely low, so prayer must stay on at all times.

Inventory Items

Ice troll cannoning requires a specialized set of inventory items designed to let you set up and use your cannon, deal with damage from the rock-throwing trolls, and keep your prayer up. You will also need to deal with the large number of valuable items you will quickly accumulate as a result of killing many trolls with good drops very quickly. You can find my recommended items in Table 81 and Figure 360.

Notes

Cannon ammunition

2,000 Cannonballs

--

I take 2,000 because that ensures I will have enough for even a trip lasting up to an hour, but is not so many that I risk losing too many cannonballs if I get unlucky and die.

Prayer potion boost

Holy wrench

Extra prayer potion

Assuming your prayer level is high enough, the wrench gives 24 “free” Prayer points on the three four-dose prayer potions you bring with.

Alching

50 Nature runes and 250 fire runes

--

During every session, the ice trolls will drop dozens of lesser armor and weapon items that are not worth keeping but are worth alching. You might even want to bring more than 50 sets if you plan to stay for longer than half an hour.

Note that I do not recommend bringing a fire staff to save fire runes: you won’t have time to keep swapping, and it increases the chances of accidents.

Cannon

Cannon base, cannon stand, cannon barrels, cannon furnace

--

It does help to bring the cannon, yes. J

Combat boost

Combat potion (4)

Super attack (4), more food

I recommend a combat or super attack potion; both are cheap and the extra attack and/or strength bonus helps you kill the rock-throwing trolls faster and thus save food. Alternately, you can just skip this potion and bring more food instead.

Prayer restore

3 Prayer potion (4)

3 Super restore (4)

You will need to keep your protection from melee prayer on the entire time you are in combat, so these are a must.

Healing

4 Tuna + 4 Lobster + 4 Swordfish + 4 Monkfish

(Many alternatives)

If you do the method properly, the only damage you will take is from the female ice trolls, which throw rocks. The type of food you bring will depend on your level and thus how fast you can kill them. See my notes on this following the table.

The choice of what food to bring involves a trade-off. On the one hand, if you bring better food you can last longer before you have to restock. On the other hand, remember that you will be damaged only slowly by the rock-throwers, while getting lots of drops that do not stack in very quick succession; this means inventory space will be tight. There’s no point bringing sharks (for example) if you have to either waste them eating when you don’t need healing, or if it means you leave good drops on the ground.

My approach is to bring a variety of foods, starting with cheap, low-healing tuna. I use these first to heal me from damage near the start of the session, which frees up inventory space for drops. Then I have the better food for later on in the trip.

Another reason not to waste good food on this activity is that there’s a nice food shop in Jatizso, just a few clicks from where you’ll be fighting. There are actually two fishmongers here: Flosi Dalksson sells raw fish, while Keepa Kettilon sells cooked fish—both have cheap prices and their shops restock very quickly (see Figure 361). If you are low on health you can run back, buy some fish from Kettilon and return to your cannon in under a minute, so there’s no reason to use your best food here.

Figure 361: Convenient, Cheap Food—What’s Not to Like?

Right between the cannoning spot and the bank is this nice shop featuring cheap fish that restock very quickly after purchase. Use it to heal during or after trips to the trolls.
