Ice Trolls Cannon Training Guide - Access, Location and World Selection

Now that we know what ice trolls are all about and have a handle on what we’re taking with to kill them, let’s take a more detailed look at exactly where we are going to be doing it. On this page I’ll tell you how to get to the trolls, show you the best place to set up your cannon, and give you tips for choosing the best world for cannoning.

Getting to the Ice Trolls

As mentioned in the introduction, ice trolls are found exclusively on the Fremennik islands of Jatizso and Neitiznot. Getting to the islands is fairly simple, though it does take a bit of time, since there is no direct teleport to either island. Note that you do not have to get all of your gear ready before you go out, since both islands have banks.

You will need to start out by getting to Rellekka, the main Fremennik town. I would assume that anyone who has completed Fremennik Trials and Fremennik Isles knows how to get to Rellekka already, so I won’t get into this in too much detail, but here’s a list of a few of the best ways, roughly in order of fastest to slowest (they are illustrated in Figure 362):

1. Use an enchanted lyre to teleport to Rellekka (red path on the map).

2. If your house is in Rellekka, teleport home and exit your house (yellow path).

3.Teleport to Camelot and follow the path past Sinclair Mansion, over the bridge and north to Rellekka (green path). Watch out for the aggressive level 64 wolves.

4.Teleport to Edgeville, then take fairy ring code “CIP” to Miscellania. Walk southeast to the docks and speak to the sailor to be taken to Rellekka who will ferry you to Rellekka (blue path).

I actually use option #4, for a special reason: it gives me a chance to check on my “kingdom” when I am in Miscellania. I can add gold or retrieve resources, and I always bring with a woodcutting axe so I can top up my “favor”.

Figure 362: Routes to Rellekka and Jatizso

This map of the northwestern corner of RuneScape shows four routes to Rellekka, and then onto Jatizso: lyre teleport (red), home teleport (yellow), Camelot teleport (green), and Miscellania fairy ring (blue). The ferry to Jatizso is in purple. Note that while the blue route appears from this map to be faster than the green, you also have to get to a fairy ring, dial the code and so forth.

Once you are in Rellekka, walk to the northernmost of the docks along the shore at the northwestern edge of town. There you will find Mord Gunnars, who will ferry you to Jatizso for free, and his wife Maria Gunnars, who can take you to Neitiznot. We are going to Jatizso, so right-click Mord, select “Ferry-Jatizso Mord Gunnars”, and in a few seconds you’ll be on the docks of the island—see the little animation I made in Figure 363.

Figure 363: Free Trip to Jatizso

Mord Gunnars will ferry you from Rellekka to Jatizso for free. The location of the dock is shown in the minimap display on the first frame, and the dock at Jatizso is in the minimap as the boat is traveling.

Walk west off the dock and follow the path that heads roughly north to the town. Open the doors and the bank is right there.

General Cannoning Location

Ice trolls can be found on all four of the main islands north of the two islands that hold the towns of Jatizso and Neitiznot. Our ultimate destination is the island just north of Jatizso, which is the best place to use a cannon on the ice trolls.

There are several reasons why this is the best spot:

  • There are plenty of ice trolls there, and only one female ice troll that will actively pursue you.

  • There are NPC guards on the island that are constantly battling with the trolls. They help you get kills faster by doing a bit of extra damage to the trolls, and also sometimes “draw the trolls fire”, causing them to leave you alone.

  • It is close to the bank.

  • It is close to a very useful food shop.

I have experimented with other locations and this island is clearly the best of the places I have tried. You will be putting your cannon just east of the very center of the island, a little southeast of the rocks near the “inlet” coming from the north. I’ll discuss the specifics more in the topic on combat technique.

World Selection and Dealing with Other Players

This is one activity where it is beneficial to be on a world that is close to full. The reason is that this causes the ice trolls to respawn faster, so that you get more kills in a given amount of time and for the prayer potions you are using.

The downside of a full world is that the ice troll female will respawn faster, and you will spend more of your time killing her. This gives you less time to deal with drops, check your stats, reload the cannon and so forth. There’s also greater potential for lag on full worlds.

It’s really up to you, then. If you want kills and drops as fast as possible, choose a world with 1,900+ people. If you want a bit more time to catch your breath, pick one with, say, 1,000 to 1,200 people.

As experienced cannoners know, one of the usual hassles with using one is avoiding other people with cannons or the many people who hate cannons. One of the great things about ice trolls is that they are almost always deserted—I have only encountered others actively trying to kill them on a handful of occasions. Usually if you see others there they are doing the quest, and are actually glad that all the ice trolls are swarming on you and not on them! J

That said, if you do show up and find someone else actively fighting in that spot, or perhaps using a cannon, be considerate and switch worlds. It most likely will take only one world hop to find an empty world. (You will need to run back to the bridge south to Jatizso to change worlds.)
