How to Avoid Skilling Burnout

Nearly anything that is enjoyable in moderation loses its appeal when taken to excess. Unfortunately, many RuneScape players are unable to approach skill training with any sense of balance; they go overboard and end up with leveling burnout so bad that they find even the mere thought of working on a skill is enough to cause them to lose consciousness.

It doesn’t have to be that way, though. The solution to leveling burnout is provided to us nicely in the form of an old Groucho Marx joke:

“Doctor, doctor! It hurts when I do this!”
“So don’t do that.”

Simply put: if you get to the point where you feel burned out from working on a skill, then you should stop doing that skill! I honestly do not understand why some people insist on working on the same skills for hour after hour, day after day, when anyone can see they aren’t enjoying what they are doing. These folks have put the cart before the horse and completely lost sight of what a game is supposed to be about.

Other than taking Dr. Marx’s sage advice, here are some extra tips to help you avoid getting burned out as you train skills:

  • Set Reasonable Goals: Make goals that are achievable and give yourself adequate time to reach them. Don’t fall into the trap of rigid, artificial goals and deadlines.

  • Do the Skills You Enjoy: Nowhere is it written that you have to get level 99 in every skill, or that you must get a certain minimum level in each skill before proceeding with other ones. If you hate a skill, don’t train it! Simple. J

  • Variety is the Spice of Life: RuneScape, unlike many other games, lets anyone train every skill without class restrictions. So take advantage of it! Work on one skill for a while, and when you get bored of it, switch to another. Do whatever you feel like at the moment. You’ll probably come back to the first skill eventually.

  • Take Breaks: If you really do want to train only one skill and not several, then break up your training so it’s not one long steady grind. Tell yourself you will, for example, Fletch for one hour and then spend an hour playing Castle Wars, before logging off for a couple of hours to do something in the real world. It really doesn’t matter if you get that skillcape a week later, I promise. J

  • Interact with Others: You can alleviate some of the boredom of skilling just by interacting with others as you play. Train the skill with a friend or just chat using private messages, for example. The new clan chat system is also an excellent way to add interest to otherwise dull activities.

  • Listen to Music as You Play: This could be either the RuneScape music, if you like that sort of thing, or whatever genre you prefer.

Above all, remember: this is a game! It’s not like your next mortgage payment is riding on your ability to get to level 90 in Runecrafting or whatever. Do what’s fun, and if it stops being fun, stop doing it. J
