How Safe is RuneScape?

Since much of TruthScape is devoted to revealing the true nature of RuneScape, I wanted to be sure to state here, up front, that RuneScape is generally a safe game. While I am critical of Jagex in many ways in other sections of TruthScape, this is one area where I feel the company does a good job. They take matters of personal safety seriously, and provide reasonable information and tools for dealing with incidents that may come up.

In its Knowledge Base, Jagex includes a section called Safety & Security Guidelines, which every new player should read. One of the subsections there is called Play Safely, which includes guidelines for safe play, and instructions for how to deal with serious issues that may require police involvement. There is also a Player Safety page in the Parents' Guide, which has an email address that parents can use for reporting serious incidents.

All that said, remember that there are literally millions of accounts in RuneScape, and hundreds of thousands of players all around the world. There is no way that Jagex can screen every player or protect players from any possibility of dangerous situations. This is why players must make themselves aware of all the security and safety guidelines on the Jagex site (linked above), some of which is expanded upon and added to in the pages that follow here on TruthScape.

The most important single rule for safety? Be aware. Before you do something, think carefully about it, and decide if it really makes sense or not. For example…does anyone in RuneScape really need your phone number? No! Would someone claiming to be a Jagex employee really ask for your password? No! Trust your instincts—if it sounds too good to be true, or it seems like it might not be a good idea, it probably isn't! If these words don’t convince you, then try Figure 75.

Figure 75: Whom Are You Really Agreeing to Meet?

This is one of the winning posters in the Internet Safety poster contest held by Pennsylvania’s Cumberland County Law Enforcement Officers Association. It’s worth a thousand words, I think.

And if you are a child or teenager and you are approached with doing anything in the real world (outside the game) be sure and tell a parent or guardian immediately!
