Herblore Quest Recommendations

There is one official quest requirement for Herblore: Druidic Ritual. This is an introductory quest that shows you the basics of the skill; it is quite easy and has no requirements of its own, so it can be easily completed by nearly any player. Completing Druidic Ritual gives you 250 Herblore XP, which will bump you up to level 3 in the skill, the minimum needed to clean the lowest-level herb (grimy guam) and make the lowest-level potion (attack).

Beyond that one quest, all others are entirely optional; I recommend certain ones because they make the skill easier or more interesting to train. I’ve organized these skill recommendations into groups based on what sort of Herblore-related capabilities they enable.

Note that this page lists quests whose rewards enhance the Herblore skill in terms of capabilities, which doesn’t necessarily mean they grant Herblore XP (and vice-versa). I also have a separate discussion of quests that you can do to get Herblore XP, and have indicated below where there is overlap between the two groups.

New Herblore Options

The following quests open up new options that expand the Herblore skill. Most can be done after you are already well “on your way” with the skill:

  • A Fairy Tale, Part II: Allows you to make magic essence potions. These are pretty useless given that magic potions are better and sell for a pittance, and they aren’t good for training because the second is a pain to get. You should at least start the quest anyway, as this allows you to use the fairy ring network, an important transport method for getting to some of the best Herblore-related monsters and areas in the game.

  • Heroes Quest: This quest teaches you how to make blamish oil, used to make oily fishing rods.

  • In Aid of the Myreque: In this quest you learn how to make Guthix Balance potions. These are used in the Temple Trekking and Burgh de Rott Ramble minigames, and can in some cases also be used as a supplemental training option. This is a mid-level quest.

  • Kennith’s Concerns: Completing this quest allows you to mine rubium, a new ore that is used as a secondary ingredient to make super fishing explosive. This is not actually a potion but rather an item used to fight mogres, part of the Slayer skill.

  • One Small Favour: During the course of this most annoying “gopher” quest, you will learn how to make Guthix rest tea. This isn’t a terribly useful potion, but there you go.

  • Shades of Mort’ton: Shows you how to make Serum 207, a potion from tarromin and ashes. While not terribly valuable to use, this is an excellent supplemental training potion. The quest is not particularly difficult, and one of the rewards is 2,000 Herblore XP.

  • Zogre Flesh Eaters: This is the quest where you learn how to make Relicym’s balm, the potion that cures disease; it also provides 2,000 Herblore XP. In addition, Jungle Potion is a prerequisite for this quest; it introduces you to the jungle herbs (two of which are used in Relicym’s balm) and grants a further 775 Herblore XP.
Assistance with Obtaining Herbs

These quests make getting herbs easier and more efficient, or enable new ways of obtaining them. Most are really of value only at the middle and higher levels of the skill:

  • Eadger’s Ruse: After completing this quest you can do the little “avoid the guards in the storage room” game at the end to get a goutweed herb as many times as you like. That’s not a very efficient way of getting herbs, but the quest is worth doing anyway for its other rewards, which include the useful Trollheim Teleport spell and 11,000 Herblore XP.

  • Haunted Mine: The Salve amulet is a reward from this quest; it gives a +15% Attack and Strength bonus when fighting undead. This works well on banshees and aberrant spectres, two of the best herb dropping monsters in the game. (It can be enhanced by completing Tarn’s Lair.)

  • My Arm’s Big Adventure: Gives you access to a fifth Farming herb patch, and this one never gets diseased. Should be done along with Eadger’s Ruse since Trollheim Teleport is really needed to get to the patch.

  • Rum Deal: Allows you fight fever spiders (Slayer level 42 required). These drop herbs only infrequently, but those drops are always kwuarms, making them a decent source if you need that particular herb.

  • Throne of Miscellania and Royal Trouble: The main reward of Throne of Miscellania is the Kingdom of Miscellania minigame, which can be a very good source of herbs (or money to buy them). Royal Trouble expands on the minigame, allowing you to get more resources.

  • Watchtower: During this quest you will access a cave that contains the only spawn of cave nightshade in the game. This is only useful when you get to level 82 Herblore. (Cave nightshade isn’t an herb but acts like one in that it is a primary ingredient in super weapon poison.) The quest also gives you access to the Watchtower Teleport spell, an essential for quick access to Yanille and the Agility Dungeon.
Easier Access to Secondary Ingredients

And finally, the following quests are related to gathering certain Herblore secondary ingredients:

  • Death to the Dorgeshuun: This quest grants access to the Dorgesh-Kaan South Dungeon, in which there is a room with several cave slime in close proximity. This is a much more efficient place to collect swamp tar than the Lumbridge Swamp Caves. It is also a good place for cave bugs, a pretty good herb dropper.

  • Fremennik Trials: Among its other benefits, this quest allows you to take a free boat trip to Waterbirth Island to collect snape grass.

  • Lunar Diplomacy and Dream Mentor: The first of these gives you access to the Lunar Magicks spellbook, including some useful teleports and the Superglass Make spell that can be useful if you make your own vials. The second adds a few extra spells to that spellbook, including the Humidify spell that instantly fills all vials in your inventory with water. Note that these are high-level quests with fairly demanding requirements.

  • Nature Spirit: This quest is required to obtain the blessed silver sickle needed to get mort myre fungi for super energy potions.

  • Tower of Life: One reward from this quest is the Creature Creation minigame, which is a source of a couple of different Herblore seconds.
