Herblore Equipment

I always like to start out any look at a skill’s items by describing the equipment that it uses. By this, I mean the tools needed to work the skill, as opposed to materials and components that are consumed or transformed as you train. In the case of Herblore, it turns out that this is a rather short discussion. J The reason is that the two main activities in the skill—cleaning grimy herbs and making potions—require no tools at all. And even when we look at the full scope of Herblore activities, there are only a couple of pieces of necessary support gear, which I describe below.

Of course, there are indirect equipment needs that come into play if you decide you want to get your materials rather than buy them. Gathering herbs and seconds from monsters, spawns, Farming patches and so forth requires armor, weapons, weight-reducing gear, Farming tools and more. These requirements are spelled out, where appropriate, in the places in this guide where these collecting methods are described.

Pestle and Mortar

This is the primary item of equipment in herblore. It is always sold as a set—you cannot buy an individual pestle or mortar—and is used for grinding and processing certain Herblore ingredients, as well as to make herb tars. It also has other miscellaneous uses, including some that are quest-related.

A pestle and mortar costs just a few gold pieces, and can be purchased in the following places:

  • Herbalist shops in Taverley and Gu’Tanoth and on Entrana

  • The shop on the second floor of the Lighthouse (after starting Horror from the Deep).

  • General stores in northwestern Karamja (Jiminua), western Keldagrim, Rellekka and Shilo Village.

  • From other players, directly or via the Grand Exchange (though this isn’t always easy.)

I recommend always having at least two pestle and mortar sets, so you store them near your herbs for convenience, then take one out to use while the other acts as a placeholder in the bank. Those who make herb tars in dungeons will find a small stash of disposable pestle-and-mortar sets useful.

Hammer

A hammer—the same simple hammer used for Smithing—is needed to break coconuts to get coconut milk.

Bowl and Cup

These simple items are needed to make Guthix rest tea. You must first fill the bowl with water, then heat it on a range and pour it into the teacup.

Sieve

You need this item if you want to make imp repellent (which is a huge hassle and yields 5 Herblore XP, so you don’t.) It can be obtained from the chemist in Rimmington, or from Elena in Ardougne after starting Mourning’s End Part I.

Herb Gloves

Players who are after specific types of herbs for making potions have a new option available to them, courtesy of the Fist of Guthix minigame: herb gloves! There are four “flavors” for these gloves, which correspond to four different high-level herbs: irit, avantoe, kwuarm and cadantine. When worn, the gloves increase the chance of getting that particular herb as a drop to a whopping 50%! Considering that most of these herbs have a drop rate of less than 10%, and in some cases even lower than 5%, that’s a pretty nice way to get the herbs you’re after.

Each pair of gloves costs a certain number of Fist of Guthix points, and also has an Herblore level requirement. The costs and requirements are shown in Table 15; the gloves themselves are shown in Figure 152.

Each pair of gloves lasts for 100 “extra” drops of the appropriate herb type, and then are destroyed.
