Godsword Related Item Scams

The godsword, introduced in early September 2007, has taken RuneScape by storm. It’s new, it’s powerful, it’s cool—and it’s expensive. It’s also somewhat complicated in terms of how it is obtained and constructed, and most people still don’t know very much about it. Any time you have a new item that is rather confusing, very expensive and highly desired, you have a perfect recipe for attracting scammers. Unfortunately, that’s what has started to occur with the godsword, so I thought I should give you a few warnings about what to look out for.

First of all, if you are planning to buy or sell whole godswords, or pieces such as shards, hilts or blades, make sure you fully understand the godsword, how all the bits go together and what they are worth. If this is all news to you, you’ll find everything you need to know in my special report on the godsword.

Once you have the background all squared away, you’ll want to know about some pitfalls you should watch out for when buying or selling godswords or their components:

  • Confusing the Godsword Blade for the Whole Godsword: A complete godsword consists of a godsword blade and one of the four godsword hilts. The blade by itself is far cheaper than any of the hilts—typically 5 or 6 million, where the hilts go for 40 million to over 100 million each. The hilt is what gives each godsword type its name, and determines its special attack. Many players are buying the blade because it is cheap, thinking it is a useable sword that just lacks the special attack of the hilt. However, that’s not how the sword works—in fact, the godsword blade by itself cannot be wielded or used for anything. The hilt is a mandatory part.

Be sure you aren’t tricked into buying a blade when you don’t have a hilt or can’t afford to buy one. If it says “blade” in the name, it’s not a useable sword.

  • Misrepresentation of Godsword Type and Hilt Values: The four godsword types vary greatly in their value, due to differences in how useful the special attacks are, and how many of each is in the game. The Zamorak and Bandos godswords are most common, typically worth around 40 to 50 million each; in contrast, the Armadyl and Saradomin godswords are more rare and go for as much as 100 million each or more. Watch out for people who say things like “godsword is only 40 mil nub” or whatever—these comments are from people have only seen the cheaper ones and don’t know what the more expensive ones are worth.

  • Portraying Shards as Hilts: I actually ran into one poor guy who had been sold a godsword blade and an extra godsword shard by a scammer, who claimed it was a full sword and that the buyer just had to find a high level smith to attach the extra shard to the blade. Shards are not hilts; make sure you don’t confuse them.

  • Arithmetic Scams: Since godswords are so valuable, people who sell them are becoming the targets of growing numbers of scammers using arithmetic/multiplication scams. Watch out.

  • Merchants and Price Manipulators: The godsword is still a rather rare item, and the market for it is so thin that it can sometimes take many hours or even days for certain types of godsword to become available. This means that when one comes up for sale it may go for a crazy price that may or may not represent what the item is really worth the next time one shows up on the market. Godsword prices are subject to large price swings, and merchants will often try to manipulate the market to resell swords for far more than they paid for them, or give lowball offers to people who get hilts from the god wars dungeon, which they then resell for much more. Be patient when buying or selling, to ensure that you find a fair price for each item.

The godsword’s a lot of fun to use, and if you prepare yourself you can buy one for a reasonable price and really enhance your RuneScape experience. Just be careful and ensure that you know what you’re buying, and you’ll do fine.
