Getting Started with Vinesweeper Lets begin our look at Vinesweeper gameplay by discussing what you need to do to get prepared and ready to dig. In the subsections below, Ill show you how to prepare to play, get to Winkins Farm, and get yourself set to start earning Vinesweeper points. Vinesweeper is a multiplayer game, so you will have to decide how you want to approach dealing with other sweepers. There is a tradeoff between playing alone or in a group, but you definitely do not want to be near other random players, as they will interfere with you. Most people really dont know how to play properly, and can easily mess up your progressfor example, they might place a flag on a seed whose location youve made obvious by digging up surrounding squares before you get to it. Even worse, they could dig up a seed and cause the whole area to be reset. For this reason, I recommend choosing a relatively empty world in which to play. Simply go to the world selection screen and sort the list of worlds in ascending order of number of players. Choose a members world that is near the top of the least (fewest players), avoiding any geographical regions that you know cause a lot of lag for your location. When you are ready to start playing, grab a spade from the bank (unless you already have one on you from doing Farming) and a stack of coins; 10,000 is a good number. Then just go to any Farming patch in the game and find the local tool leprechaun (except the one on Trollheim; the leprechaun there is on vacation and wont help you). Talk to him, select the Winkins Farm dialog option, and youll soon be on your way. Or to save time, just right-click the little green dude and select Teleport Tool leprechaun, and hell send you with no further ado. When you arrive, youll be in the northeast corner of the central area of the farm, next to a green portal, which is used to exit the game. Youll also see a set of four instruction signs in a row next to the portal (Figure 286). You can read these for a few tips, though this guide obviously is better. J
You can easily integrate Vinesweeper into your regular farming routines, by playing it after doing a Farming run or picking produce. Note that you cannot bring any followers (pets or familiars) to the farm, nor can you summon familiars while there. In addition to your trusty spade, youll need flags and ogleroots to play the game. Once you arrive at the farm, make your way to the farmhouse; youll find Mrs. Winkin inside, and Farmer Blinkin standing just outside the doorway. I suggest right-clicking Farmer Blinkinsince hes closer and you need him for the next step anywayand choosing the Buy-flags option. The first time you play, youll get a supply of 10 flags for free. If you are returning to the farm after having been here previously, then youll be given back any flags you owned that were in your inventory or unclaimed from the last time. If thats fewer than 10 flags (the maximum allowed by the game), youll also be given an option to buy more, up to that limit. Each additional flag costs 500 gp, and youre best off having all 10. Next, you need ogleroots, which you feed to the rabbits so they wont destroy your flags. (Youll accumulate them over time as you dig the field, but you want some at the start to protect your flags.) Right-click Farmer Blinkin (Mrs. Winkin doesnt sell these) and choose Buy-roots. You can buy as many as you want; they are only 10 gp each, and youll get that money back at the end of your gameplay for any you dont use. I recommend buying 20 (see Figure 287).
With your spade, flags and roots, youre ready for action. Climb over one of the four stiles into the playing field, and find a nice spot to start playing. You want to find a location that is free of other players, so simply use your minimap to scout out a spot where you dont see any white dots. You will frequently need to return to the farmhouse to get flags back after using them, so it is convenient to play near one of the stiles. And of these, the most convenient is the one south of the farmhouse, since Farmer Blinkin is right there. Of course, other players know this too, so you might need to go further away to get a quiet spot to yourself. I often play just over the western or eastern spiles, which are still close enough to get more flags quickly, but generally unoccupied. If at all possible, try to locate a spot where there are some empty squares visible in the grid; the reason for this will become clear as you learn how to play. If you enter the green portal near where you arrived at the farm, youll be instantly returned to the farming patch where you first accessed Winkins Farm. You can also teleport out of the farm using spells, jewelry and so forth. Whenever you leave the farm, youll get a message on the screen thanking you for playing. Any flags you had in your inventory will be stored for you to reclaim from Mrs. Winkin or Farmer Blinkin on your next visit. Also, any ogleroots you had in your inventory (whether you bought them or dug them up) will be redeemed for 10 gp a piece (see Figure 288).
