Eyes of Newt

I know I’ve said that there have been several secondary items that I recommend you just buy from other players—but I really recommend that you do this for eyes of newt. J They are really quite boring to get in any other way, and they are so cheap—about 75 gp each—that you are seriously undervaluing your time if you collect them yourself.

Not convinced? Alright. Well, you can sometimes get these as monster drops—cave bugs and cave crawlers drop them, but just a few per hour. That leaves only buying them from shops or using the Creature Creation minigame.

Buying from Stores

Eyes of newt can be purchased for the princely sum of 3 gp each from the Herblore shops in Taverley, Entrana and Gu’Tanoth, or Betty’s magic store in Port Sarim. The last of these is the one that most people usually think of as being “the” source for eyes of newt, because it’s the only place even somewhat close to a bank. It takes about 1 minute to get a full load by banking in Draynor Village, running to Port Sarim, buying 27 eyes and then teleporting back.

However, it turns out that two of the other options are also worth considering: the shops in Taverley and Entrana can be accessed using the hot air balloons unlocked as part of the quest Enlightened Journey. There’s a balloon access point right near Castle Wars, which is one of the fastest banks to get to in the game, making the system work rather well. This does cost you logs and duelling rings, but saves you having to recharge your amulets.

To take the balloon to either spot, you need one set of regular logs. Head northeast from Castle Wars and you’ll find Assistant Morrow; right-click him and then choose to fly to Taverley or Entrana. In Taverley, run west to Jatix’s herblore shop; on Entrana, run south and you’ll find Frincos. Buy your eyes and then teleport back to Castle Wars and bank.

In my tests, Taverley took around the same 1 minute as going between Draynor Village and Port Sarim, but used less run energy. Entrana was the best option of all, though, taking around 50 seconds and consuming even less run energy still. Using Frincos’ shop, you can get around 1,900 eyes of newt per hour.

Using Creature Creation

This minigame is unlocked at the end of the Tower of Life quest, and can be used to generate several important Herblore seconds.

Unfortunately, the time needed to make eyes of newt in this way is far greater than that required to just buy them from shops. In my test, it took me 3.5 minutes to get a full load of eyes of newt this way. In fact, it took me longer to just get from the bank to the altar to start making newtroosts than it takes to just go buy 27 eyes of newt on Entrana! Obviously, then, there’s no point in bothering.

Recommendations

Buy eyes of newt from other players on the GE. I promise I won’t tell anyone, honest! J

If you can’t live with that, then use the hot air balloon to Entrana. If that’s not an option, you’re stuck running between Draynor Village and Port Sarim.
