Dragging Victims into the Wild

Finally, I've saved the most obnoxious Wilderness lure for last. Like most Wilderness lures, the ability of scammers to pull this off has been greatly reduced by the Wilderness ditch, but not completely eliminated. Therefore, you still need to understand how it works.

Other Wilderness lures involve deception and lying, which makes them illegal and wrong, but they do at least require the victim to ultimately make the decision to step into the Wild. This lure is far worse, because it is the only Wilderness lure that can allow someone who is not in the Wilderness to literally run into the Wild, where they can be attacked. It works by taking advantage of bugs in the game.

If you've never heard of this before, it's because Jagex doesn't allow it to be discussed, both because they don't want people discussing bugs, and for fear of giving more people the idea to use it. Now, as I've explained in detail in my Introduction to TruthScape, I generally disagree with this policy, because it keeps potential victims in the dark. However, this particular lure is one in which knowing the details of how it is done only helps the scammer, not the potential victim. So unless someone can convince me that I am wrong in that belief, I will not explain exactly how it is done. (Of course, I'd prefer if Jagex would just fix the problem, but that's a different issue.)

This method can be used as part of a forum trade lure or an in-game lure. Before the Wilderness ditch, it started with the lurer convincing the victim to meet in one of the former dangerous places near the border of the Wild. The location was always chosen so that the victim would see the old Wilderness warning sign despite not actually going into the Wild; this ensured that it wouldn’t pop up during the lure itself. The bridge northeast of Edgeville bank was a popular choice.

The lurer would then ask the victim to follow him, making up some excuse such as needing to use the fairy ring east of Edgeville, or to meet a friend. He'd reassure the victim that he was not planning to go into the Wild, and the victim would indeed not enter the Wild until the trap was sprung.

At this point, the lurer would commit an act that takes advantage of a bug in the game. This would cause the victim, who was following the lurer, to be dragged into the Wild despite never clicking there—it might even have been possible to do when trading, even if the victim was not following the lurer. Once in the Wild, the victim would be attacked by the lurer and/or an accomplice. Again, I am not going to tell you precisely how this was done, because it doesn't matter; only lurers would have needed to know.

Okay, but this was before the ditch; if someone tries this now, the ditch will stop the victim from being dragged into the Wild. So, you are wondering, why am I telling you all about it here instead of just putting it in the subsection on obsolete lures? The reason is simple: the bug itself has not been fixed. The new Wilderness ditch makes it far more difficult for you to be affected by it, but it’s still there, and a lurer could still try it if you agreed to cross over the Wilderness ditch.

The solution is simple, of course, and this represents just one more place where I can emphasize to you that you should never cross the Wilderness ditch, for any reason, as part of completing a trade.
