Dark Beast Slaying Guide - Common, Uncommon and Rare Drops

As mentioned in the introduction, dark beasts are not generally a monster you will fight specifically to make money. They are expensive to kill and their main value drop, the dark bow, is quite rare. They do, however, have some rather nice secondary drops—for example, they seem to be one of the best monsters in the game in terms of dropping half keys—and that can help keep you motivated while you wait for one of those bows (see Figure 464). J

Figure 464: Dark Beast Drops

These are the drops I got from around 40 kills (not the mourners’ stuff or the potions, obviously, and the natures I brought with as well.) I usually get at least one half key per trip; the runite bar is much more rare.

Let’s take a look at the common, uncommon and rare drops from dark beasts. Note that I categorize drops roughly as follows:

  • Very Common: The monster drops the item often, and you are almost guaranteed to see it at least once if you kill it 20 times or more.

  • Common: The monster usually drops the item at least once every 20 or so kills.

  • Uncommon: The monster drops the item perhaps 1 in 50 times.

  • Rare: The drop comes about 1 in 100 kills.

  • Very Rare: This designates a drop that is seen only after killing hundreds of monsters, or one I’ve never gotten but others have claimed to seen on rare occasions.

My drop tables are listed roughly in order of increasing value. These value figures are approximations based roughly on current market prices, or alch values for items that a high-level player normally wouldn’t bother to sell. Bear in mind that due to the many major changes that Jagex is making at the time I write this, market prices are very much in flux. These item values will likely change frequently over the weeks after I publish this guide.

100%, Very Common and Common Drops

Dark beasts drop bones 100% of the time. I take advantage of this by using the Bones to Peaches spell in some of my limited-prayer combat methods, which we’ll discuss later on.

Their other very common and common drops are shown in Table 97, with comments as appropriate.

Table 97: Very Common and Common Dark Beast Drops

600 to 1,200

You may either take these home as drops, or use them to extend your trip, depending on the method you choose.

Blood runes (7)

2,250

Ain’t worth what they used to be, but still a decent drop.

Uncommon, Rare and Very Rare Drops

Dark beasts are a good example of why I prefer to not just list all of a monster’s possible drops, but also to specify each one’s frequency. A quick perusal of its drop list shows an impressive array of high-valued drops, but unfortunately, most of these are exceedingly rare. In fact, despite killing around 500 or so dark beasts to make this guide, I received only a small fraction of the possible very rare drops from this monster, so don’t expect to see most of these items either.

Table 98 shows the uncommon, rare and very rare drops for dark beasts. Due to how long it takes to kill dark beasts and the rarity of so many of its drops, I was unable to determine frequencies for most of them from personal experience. Thus, many of the very rare items in the table are based on reports from other players or websites.
