Buying Accounts, Items or RuneScape Gold for Real Money

Jagex completely prohibits the buying or selling of RuneScape items or gold for any sort of real world compensation. This means you cannot sell RuneScape gold or items for money, nor in exchange for real world services. For example, you can't tell someone you'll help him with his homework if he pays you 100k of RuneScape gold.

Real world item trading is prohibited by RuneScape Rule #12. There are two main reasons why it is not allowed. The first is that it's inherently unfair to let someone who happens to have money in the real world “buy success” in the game without having earned it in the game. The second is that it's an easy way to get scammed; this latter issue is what we're going to focus on here.

Gold and accounts are often traded on “outlaw” web sites dedicated to illegal RuneScape activities. If you buy an account using one of these sites, you take all of the same risks associated with buying accounts within the RuneScape game:

  • You risk being banned for breaking Rule #12.

  • You could be buying a stolen account, and in fact, probably are. You are therefore contributing to other people being scammed out of their accounts.

  • There's a good chance that after you buy the account, the original owner will recover it and you'll have lost the account and all items you put on it.

  • Since there is no equivalent of a “trade window” for buying accounts with real money, you run a high risk of losing your money to a scammer. They will always want you to pay first, and then they can just keep the money. Since what you are doing is against the rules, you won't even have anyone to complain to.

As with the offers to do work on accounts, these sites will sometimes claim that they are “safe”, and that they have “approved, trusted middlemen” and so forth. And once again, this is not true (again, see Figure 109). Since real world trading is against the rules, all of this activity is illegal. Anyone willing to sell gold or accounts for money is effectively admitting that they don't care about fair play if it is to their benefit, and anyone with that attitude is at least, potentially, a scammer—no matter what they say.

Another issue is all the big companies that advertise RuneScape gold for sale. These ads are pervasive—they are found on nearly any Web page that uses ads where the game is discussed. The reason is that most Web sites don’t contract with advertisers directly—they use ad networks, which automatically display the most relevant ads, such as the example in Figure 110. Since the companies selling RuneScape gold are making big money from it, they can afford to advertise. (I block these ads here at TruthScape, though new ones show up all the time.) The problem is that hacking sites can also advertise on these networks, and there’s no way for an average player to tell them apart.

As always, the best advice is to play fair and stay safe.

Figure 110: Some Cheaters Do Prosper

Selling RuneScape gold for real money is a big business, and ads like this one are everyone on sites where RuneScape is discussed. The problem is: how do you tell the “trustworthy” companies from the ones who are just trying to steal your account? You can’t—and you shouldn’t try.
