The newest category of Herblore products, barbarian mix potions are created using barbarian herblore, one of four skill enhancements introduced to the game as part of the barbarian training update in the summer of 2007. To make these potions, you catch leaping trout, salmon and sturgeon using barbarian fishing, then cut them open to get roe or caviar. These are then added to several types of regular potions to make barbarian mix potions, which retain the potion’s usual effect, but add to it a small amount of healing. You also get extra Herblore XP for making them.

Barbarian fishing yields three types of fish: leaping trout, leaping salmon and leaping sturgeon. Cutting these open yields fish eggs of two sorts: roe (from leaping trout and leaping salmon) and caviar (from leaping sturgeon). Roe and caviar are also tradeable, so you can buy them if you’d rather not get them yourself.

Once you have roe and caviar, there are 24 different potions to which you can add them to make barbarian mixes. The five lowest-level potions—attack, antipoison, Relicym’s balm, strength and restore—can be made with roe, while the other 19 require caviar. The mixes using roe heal 3 HP per dose, while the ones containing caviar heal 6 HP per dose. (Note that you can also use caviar in the ones that need roe, but that’s a waste since roe is much easier to get.) Table 25 shows all of the barbarian mix potions that can be made, along with the Herblore XP you get for each.

Barbarian mixes are a great idea, and they certainly have their applications. Unfortunately, Jagex somewhat crippled them with a couple of important restrictions that limit their usefulness, both from a training standpoint and for use.

First and foremost, you can only make barbarian mixes from 2-dose potions. For example, you add roe to a 2-dose attack potion to make a 2-dose attack mix potion. Since most players have 3-dose potions, this means extra work is required before mixes can be made. Barbarian potions also lack a “Make-X” feature, so assembling them takes more planning and work.

In addition to having to make mixes as 2-dose potions, you cannot further combine them when done: 2 doses per vial is the limit. This makes barbarian mixes a matter of a trade-off rather than a “no brainer”: you must choose between having 4 doses in an inventory slot or 2 doses plus some healing.

That said, don’t listen to the people who say barbarian mixes are “useless”, because they are not. As just one example, two 2-dose prayer mixes take the same amount of space as one 4-dose prayer potion and one shark, but give you 24 HP of healing instead of 20. Again, there’s a trade-off: the mixes are better for situations where you need slow, steady healing over time, while the conventional potion and shark are superior where you need to heal a large number of Hitpoints quickly.

Mixes also work well when fighting monsters where you stay for only a short time—like mithril dragons—and thus do not need four doses of some potions.
