Baiting with Worn or Dropped Items

Current Jagex rules on item scamming prohibit someone from luring you into the Wilderness under false pretences, such as lying about wanting to do a trade. However it is legal for someone to try to use passive tactics to try to entice you into coming into the Wild on your own. In RuneScape, this is sometimes called baiting; it's a particularly good name, actually, because the process very much resembles baiting a fishing hook or animal trap.

This type of lure is essentially a setup by someone who makes a potential victim think he can easily get an item or a kill in the Wilderness. The “bait” usually takes one of two forms: either equipment that is worn by the lurer, or a pricey item that's simply dropped on the ground. In the first case, the lurer is tempting a potential victim to come into the Wild to attack them to get their equipment; for example, they might be wearing a party hat and no other armor or weapons, making them look helpless. In the latter case, the lurer is hoping that the victim will try to run in and grab the item, putting him in a position to be attacked.

In both cases, as long as the lurer doesn't tell any lies or mislead you with words, this type of luring is legal. If you decide to go into the Wild to get something, or certainly to attack someone unprovoked, you cannot later complain if you get killed. And you probably will be killed. The people who pull these lures usually know what they are doing. Don't be fooled by level differences either, in the case of items dropped on the ground—the lurer almost certainly has an Ancient Mage friend waiting, just out of view, ready to take you down.

As I say so often, use common sense! Would someone really stand in the Wild wearing a hat worth 250 million and have no way of defending himself? Or drop expensive equipment on the ground just for fun? If you see this sort of silliness going on, just don't fall for it. Or if you can safely do so, try casting Telekinetic Grab and taking the items off the ground without entering the Wild at all—lurers hate that. J

Finally, bear in mind that the new Wilderness ditch can tell you where the Wild begins, and can stop you from going in unwittingly, but it can’t protect you from a lure where you voluntarily choose to go into the Wild.
