Aviansies Magic/Ranged Training Guide - Single Monster Ranged Method (No Prayer)

This is what I consider to be the most basic, simple way of training on aviansies. Using a crossbow, you fight aviansies one at a time, gaining experience and lots of good drops. This method is slower than ranging multiple aviansies using prayer, but is a lot less chaotic, and is thus more suited to those who prefer a more relaxed style of play.

As discussed in the section “Choosing a Ranged Weapon and Ammunition”, I recommend the use of a rune crossbow and adamant bolts for maximum efficiency. You can substitute most other types of ranged gear, though, especially if you have a reasonably high Ranged level. I also include general information here on using the crystal bow, which is the best non-crossbow option.

There are three slight variations on this method, which differ based on how they use food, potions or spells for healing; see “Healing Methods: Food, Potions and Spells” for details. Your choice here will have an impact mainly on how you manage inventory, when you use ranging potions, and how long you can stay in the dungeon. For the most part, though, it’s the same regardless of which way you go in this respect; I point out differences below where appropriate. I also discuss the optional use of the Saradomin godsword in a special section at the end.

Here’s a summary of the key information about this technique:

  • Technique: Single Monster Ranged Aviansie Training

  • Risk Level: Low.

  • Risk Level Relative to Other Techniques: Low.

  • Kills Per Trip: Can vary from around 125 to 300 or more, depending on healing method, what food you bring, and how often you get swordfish drops.

  • Kills Per Hour: About 135 to 140 (slightly higher for crystal bow).

  • Cost Per Kill: About 400 if using food only; 500 if using food, Saradomin brews and super restores; 375 if using Bones to Peaches without tablets; and around 400 if using B2P tablets. Add 150 or more per kill if using a crystal bow.

  • Net Profit Per Hour: Approximately 430k to 460k (about 20k to 30k lower for crystal bow, assuming 180k recharge cost).

  • Experience Gained Per Hour: Approximately 27k to 29k Ranged XP (slightly higher for crystal bow).

The estimates above are based on using recommended equipment and supplies, a Ranged level of about 90 and a Defence level of around 95. Lower Ranged levels will result in lower kill, XP and profit values; lower Defence levels will lead to shorter trips.

Equipment

Your three priorities in equipment selection here are to increase your ranged attack bonus, get a reasonable amount of defence to protect against the aviansies’ ranged attacks, and ensure you have at least one item of Armadyl, Saradomin and Zamorak gear so you aren’t attacked on sight. Mostly this boils down to fairly standard ranged gear, with a few changes.

Here’s what I use and recommend, along with alternatives (see Figure 456 for an illustration):

  • Head: Saradomin coif. This is my choice for Sara gear; you can substitute a Robin hood hat, for example, and use Sara dragonhide armor elsewhere, or use an Armadyl helm.

  • Cloak: Ava’s accumulator. Gives a Ranged bonus and picks up bolts for you; accept no substitute. J The only exception is if you are using a crystal bow, in which case you do not need it for picking up ammo, but you might want to wear it anyway for its Ranged bonus. Instead you could wear a Zamorak cloak to fulfill your “Zammy gear requirement”.

  • Neck: Pendant of Armadyl. This is pretty much a requirement, unless you have the pricey Armadyl armor, in which case you can wear an amulet of fury or something else here.

  • Quiver: 500 adamant bolts. You probably won’t use them all, but this gives you a cushion to be sure that you don’t run out.

  • Weapon: Rune crossbow, or crystal bow if using one. The crystal bow should be fully or mostly charged.

  • Body: Black dragonhide body. Alternatives include Saradomin blessed dragonhide (if not using a Sara coif), or Karil’s. The latter incurs repair costs, though, and doesn’t provide much benefit. An Armadyl chestplate is actually the best ranging gear and also means you don’t need the Pendant of Armadyl, but it’s very expensive. Zamorak blessed dragonhide is one way to keep the Zammy monsters off your back if using a crystal bow.

  • Shield: Unholy book. As an alternative, you can try using an actual shield to increase your defence level, but this will reduce your ranged attack and mean you have to wear a piece of Zammy armor somewhere else. Obviously you will omit this if using a crystal bow.

  • Legs: Black dragonhide legs. Instead, you can choose Saradomin blessed dragonhide legs (if not using a Sara coif), or Karil’s. Again, there’s not much point to using Karil’s here. If you have the expensive Armadyl skirt, it’s an even better choice. Zamorak blessed legs are an option if using a crystal bow.

  • Gloves: “Barrows” gloves from the Recipe for Disaster quest. If you can’t get these gloves, you may be better off wearing black dragonhide vambraces rather than lower level RFD gloves.

  • Feet: Ranger boots. There’s nothing really close to them in terms of stats.

  • Ring: Archer ring.

Figure 456: Single Monster Ranged Aviansies Training Equipment and Inventory

This animation shows the different inventory items for each of the three suggested healing methods. The equipment is the same in each case, and is designed mostly to maximize ranging attack bonus.

Note that this gear does not include any way of teleporting (nor do my inventory items below). I simply use the Home Teleport spell when done fighting, which also conveniently leaves me near an altar to recharge prayer. As you fight, you will also get runes that let you teleport out if you need to leave a little faster.

Inventory

As mentioned earlier, there are three different general approaches in terms of healing items. While some of your inventory items will be the same in all three cases, most of what you take with you will be dictated by which choice of food/potions/spells you make. I’ll now explain these options and what I recommend for each. Note that you can see all three inventory options in Figure 456.

Here are the supplies you’ll want to bring if using just food:

  • Runes: Law runes (2), fire runes (252) and nature runes (50). The two laws and two of the fires are for the Trollheim teleport; the remaining runes are for alching drops.

  • Stat Boosting: One ranging potion (4). You can bring two, but in most cases for this method you will run out of food at about the same time as the single ranging potion runs out.

  • Good Food: 18 good food items. I recommend pineapple pizzas, as they are cheap and easy to make, and heal 22 each in 2 bites.

  • “Disposable” Food: Six lesser pieces of food: for example, four tuna and two lobsters. The reason for taking these instead of 24 pieces of good food is that you will need several inventory slots for stacking drops like addy bars, water runes and air runes. Bringing only good food will result in either wasting some of the food or some of the drops.

If you are going with food, Saradomin brews and super restores, take the following:

  • Runes: Law runes (2), fire runes (252) and nature runes (50)—the same as above.

  • Stat Boosting: Two ranging (4) potions. This will usually let you fight with a ranged bonus for most of the trip.

  • Healing / Restore Potions: Four Saradomin brew (4) potions and two super restore (4) potions. You will use two Sara brew doses and one super restore dose before each ranging potion dose.

  • Good Food: 11 good food items. As above, I recommend pineapple pizzas.

  • “Disposable” Food: Six lesser pieces of food, such as four tuna and two lobsters, for the same reason mentioned above.

For the Bones to Peaches (B2P method), here’s the inventory to take:

  • Runes: Law runes (2), fire runes (252), nature runes (100), and earth runes (100). The laws, fires and 50 of the natures are for teleport and alching, as before. The 50 extra nature runes and the 100 earth runes are for casting B2P. You will also need water runes, but since these are a common drop from the aviansies, you don’t need to bring any with. This is enough runes for 25 castings of B2P; you can bring even more runes if you want, of course.

If you can’t cast B2P yourself, substitute a stack of B2P tablets for the earth runes, and leave the nature runes at 50.

  • Stat Boosting: Two or possibly three ranging (4) potions. How many you bring depends on how long you want to stay in the dungeon.

  • “Disposable” Food: Six lesser pieces of food, such as four tuna and two lobsters, for the same reason mentioned above.

  • “Moderately Good” Food: The rest of your inventory (15 or 16 slots) should be filled with “moderately good” food. You do not need the absolute best food here, because you can cast B2P, which provides lots of food at a very low cost. I recommend something like lobsters or swordfish.

If you don’t have the Trollheim Teleport spell, then you will need to substitute either climbing boots or 12 gold coins for the two laws and two fires that the spell uses.

If you have never been to the GWD before, you need to take a rope instead of one piece of food.

Trip Preparation

First, make sure your prayer is fully charged; if not, get thee to an altar. Once that’s done, if you are using Trollheim Teleport, you can finish preparations at any bank. If you aren’t, then I recommend getting out a games necklace, teleporting to Burthorpe, and then going over to the bank either in the Warriors’ Guild (if you can access it) or the Rogues’ Den (if not). Put the games necklace back in the bank.

While banking, do the following:

  1. Use any type of cheap food to heal up completely.

  2. Make sure none of your other stats have been inadvertently lowered.

  3. Put on or check all your equipment to make sure it is correct.

  4. Get out of the bank all of the inventory items and supplies you are taking with.
Getting to the Aviansies

Go to the God Wars Dungeon using the directions and maps I provides in the topic on location and access. Enter the dungeon and make your way south to the main combat area I described in “Choosing a Combat Position and Target Monsters”.

Starting Combat

When you arrive in the designated combat area, start off by looking for the “Zammy pets” in the area to see what they are up to. If any of them are “stuck” you will want to lure them out or kill whatever aviansie they are stuck trying to attack. Also keep an eye out for any aviansies that are already damaged and try to finish them off.

Near the start of a trip, inventory management will be somewhat of a challenge. This is part of why you brought “disposable” food, of course, so use that up as you kill the first few aviansies, to make room for stackable drops. If you have to eat a low-value piece of food before you technically need the healing, that’s not the end of the world. You can also temporarily drop food items to pick up a bit later.

I don’t recommend that you start collecting low-value drops (like feathers or body runes) until you have enough inventory space that they won’t keep getting in your way. Keeping an inventory slot open to collect addy bolts that the accumulator doesn’t pick up will also save you time and hassle.

Another issue is when to take your first dose of ranging potion. The wintry area above the dungeon will have drained your Ranged stat by a few points, so you may wish to wait until it restores to its normal maximum before taking your first sip of ranging pot.

If you brought Sara brews, I recommend using up enough prayer so that you are down to about 2/3 of your prayer points, and fighting without prayer until slightly injured. Then take two Sara brew doses, one super restore and one ranging pot dose, in that order. You will now be maxed out in Prayer, Ranged and Defence and ready for aviansie hunting!

Combat Routine

You should be able to settle into a combat routine fairly quickly, since there’s no real special preparation required to kill these monsters. I recommend staying in the general area of the gorak, so you can increase your kill count by letting it do damage to the aviansies around it.

As you fight, you will need to keep an eye on your health and your ranging level. How you manage this depends on what you brought with:

  • Food Only: Simply use your food as necessary, being sure not to waste any. Take a ranging pot dose whenever the last one wears off.

  • Food and Sara Brews: Plan to use Sara brews about every 10 to 12 minutes or so, when your ranging pot dose wears off. Use food in between doses, to heal and to make inventory space for drops. Also remember to do some fighting with Protection from Ranged on, to make use of the prayer points you get from the super restore potions. When you are ready, take two or three Sara brew doses, one super restore dose and then a ranging pot dose.

  • Food and Bones to Peaches: Start out by using up the food you brought with you. Once you have empty spaces in your inventory, begin collecting dropped bones. When you have as many bones as you can carry, cast Bones to Peaches, and then use those peaches up as needed, collecting more bones as required.

Note that you can get extra healing by temporarily dropping items like herbs to pick up more bones, casting B2P, and then eating enough peaches to make room for the items you dropped. This does take extra time, of course.

In addition to monitoring your levels, you will want to keep an eye on the Zammy pets in the area. Try to get some damage in on any aviansie fighting a pet, so you get the drop. If you do this and find multiple aviansies attacking you at once, that’s a good time to use up some of your prayer points to prevent taking lots of damage! J

Ending the Trip

When you start to run low on food, potions and/or inventory space, you will want to wind down this trip and get ready to leave. Before you go, be sure to use up any prayer points you may still have, since you can recharge prayer before going. This is also a good time to fill any inventory slots with drops from the aviansies, even if they are lower-valued ones like silver ore or anti-poison potions.

When you’re ready to depart, just cast the Home Teleport spell. Wait for it to activate, and then soon you’ll be back in “civilization”. Recharge your prayer points—typically in Lumbridge—and then get ready for another trip, if desired.

Advanced Saradomin Godsword Variation

If you have a Saradomin godsword (SGS), then you can stay much longer in the dungeon, by making use of its very helpful special attack. For more details, see “Extending Trips with the Saradomin Godsword”.

For starters, bring with the sword instead of one piece of food. You may also wish to bring an extra ranging potion, since the sword will let you stay in the dungeon longer than you would be able to otherwise. You can use the SGS with just food, or in combination with Sara brews and super restores or casting B2P. In my tests, though, I found that with the SGS I didn’t need the potions or spells.

The SGS gives you two specials per special attack bar, which takes around 5 minutes to recharge. Thus, it’s best to keep track of the time, and plan to use the specials every 5 to 6 minutes or so. (Don’t go too often or you’ll waste time waiting for the spec bar.) Between uses of the sword, be sure to let your health bar and prayer get down at least a few points.

Go into the alcove where the pyrefiends hang out, equip the sword, and use the two specials. Then switch back to your bow and unholy book and resume fighting.

That’s pretty much it—very easy. You get free healing and prayer points that let you fight for a long time. Just remember, if using the unholy book, to re-equip it before leaving the alcove, or you might have a gorak or werewolf on your tail. If you do, just run away for a bit and then come back.

Additional Notes and Tips

Here are a few extra tips to keep in mind:

  • If you have extra inventory space, keep a slot for the steel arrows that the accumulator constantly generates; this will save you the hassle of having to drop them all the time.

  • Don’t venture too far north going after aviansies, or you may find a Bandos monster coming after you (the one faction that is aggressive with your equipment.)

  • You are usually better off to save your prayer points for the end of the trip, except when using super restore potions.

  • If you get swordfish as a drop and don’t have room to hold them all, you can sometimes “juggle” them (or other food items). Drop a few items and pick up the swordfish. You have about two minutes before they disappear; before that, drop some other items and pick up the items you dropped prior. Keep going until the fish is used up healing damage.

  • You can safely let your health get down to about 50% before ending a trip.
