Aviansies Magic/Ranged Training Guide - Single Monster Mage Method

Maging aviansies is not as fast, efficient or profitable as ranging them, but it’s the only way to kill them while training your Magic skill. I devised my aviansie maging method after numerous experiments; it uses a variety of healing techniques along with balanced equipment to let you get a good amount of XP while more than covering your cost of runes.

For this method, I assume that you have available the Magic Dart spell, which requires level 55 Slayer and a Slayer staff. This spell provides the best compromise between speed of killing and cost. If you cannot cast it, alternatives include fire wave or using fire bolt with chaos gauntlets from the Family Crest quest. Fire wave is expensive but does up to 20 damage; fire bolt with gauntlets is more cost effective. The gauntlets allow the fire bolt spell to hit up to 15, and the spell uses chaos runes instead of deaths or bloods. This is still slower than Magic Dart, however.

Here’s a summary of the key information about this technique:

  • Technique: Single Monster Mage Aviansie Training

  • Risk Level: Low.

  • Risk Level Relative to Other Techniques: Low.

  • Kills Per Trip: Up to 200, and possibly more if you get swordfish drops.

  • Kills Per Hour: About 120.

  • Cost Per Kill: About 2,200.

  • Net Profit Per Hour: Approximately 160k to 180k.

  • Experience Gained Per Hour: Approximately 33k to 36k Magic XP (includes alching XP).

The estimates above are based on using recommended equipment and supplies, a Magic level of about 90 and a Defence level of around 95. Lower Magic levels will result in lower kill, XP and profit values; lower Defence levels may lead to shorter trips or the use of more castings of Bones to Peaches.

Equipment

Equipment becomes a bit more complicated when maging: as in the ranged method, we need ranged defence, but there are no mage robes in the game that provide any. Thus, we have to balance getting a decent magic attack level with also using some items that provide ranged defence. In practice, this means we have to substitute a real shield for the unholy book used when ranging: a charged dragonfire shield or granite shield.

Of course, we still need at least one item of Armadyl, Saradomin and Zamorak gear to keep the monsters unaggressive, but now we can’t use the unholy book so we must be more creative. My preferred method here is to use a Cape of Zamorak or Zamorak Cloak, and wear a Saradomin mitre in the head slot. The mitre provides decent mage attack bonus. Of course, you could swap these (Zamorak mitre and Cape of Saradomin or Saradomin Cloak).

Here’s what I use and recommend, along with some alternatives (see Figure 459):

  • Head: Saradomin mitre. Alternately, you can wear a Zamorak mitre and a Sara piece in the cloak slot.

  • Cloak: Cape of Zamorak. This provides a +10 magic attack bonus and a bit of defence, and also keeps the Zamorak monsters off your back. An alternative is a Zamorak Cloak, which provides +1 magic attack, +3 ranged defence, and a +3 bonus to prayer. Again, you can use a Saradomin item here if you wear a Zamorak piece in the head slot.

  • Neck: Pendant of Armadyl. You must wear this.

  • Quiver: Empty.

  • Weapon: Slayer staff, if using Magic Dart, or a fire or air staff if using an elemental spell.

  • Body: Ahrim’s robetop. The best magic robe in the game; splitbark or mystic robes are alternatives.

  • Shield: Dragonfire shield. This provides the best ranged defence in the game, assuming it is charged. A granite shield is not as good but is a lot cheaper and still provides good ranged defence.

  • Legs: Ahrim’s robeskirt. Again, splitbark or mystic are less desirable alternatives.

  • Gloves: “Barrows” gloves from the Recipe for Disaster quest, or whatever RFD gloves you have access to.

  • Feet: Infinity boots. Mystic is a much cheaper alternative at a cost of +3 magic attack instead of +5.

  • Ring: Seers ring.

Figure 459: Single Monster Maging Aviansies Training Equipment and Inventory

This is a really odd looking getup, which reflects the need to balance many requirements when maging aviansies. Ahrims robes provide the bulk of the magic attack bonuses, while the shield provides +72 ranged defence to prevent excessive damage from the aviansies.

Once again, there’s no teleport capability here or in the inventory described below. I just use the Home Teleport spell when done fighting, which also leaves me near an altar to recharge prayer. As you fight, you will also get runes that let you teleport out of the dungeon if needed.

Inventory

The inventory items for maging combine elements of the three different healing approaches used when ranging. The reason I do this is that I find that I take more damage when maging than using a bow, at least in part because each kill takes longer, and in part because the aviansies seem to hit me more. Thus, I take with good food, Saradomin brew and super restore doses, and also Bones to Peaches (B2P) spell runes, to let me stay a reasonable amount of time.

Here are my specific recommendations:

  • Runes: Law runes (2), fire runes (252), nature runes (100), and earth runes (100). The laws, fires and 50 of the natures are for teleport and alching, as always. The 50 extra nature runes and the 100 earth runes are for casting B2P (25 casts’ worth, which is generally more than enough). You will also need water runes, but you’ll get those from the aviansies long before you need to cast B2P.

If you can’t cast B2P yourself, substitute a stack of B2P tablets for the earth runes, and leave the nature runes at 50.

  • Combat Runes: Assuming you are using Magic Dart, bring with stacks of death and mind runes. I bring 2000 deaths and 8000 minds—more than I need, but then I needn’t worry about running out. If using a different spell, take the runes it requires.

  • Healing / Restore Potions: Two Saradomin brew (4) potions and one super restore (4) potion. These are not only to heal and provide prayer, but also to boost your Defence level.

  • Good Food: 13 good food items. I recommend pineapple pizzas as they are cheap and easy to make, and heal 22 each in 2 bites.

  • “Disposable” Food: Six lesser pieces of food, such as four tuna and two lobsters. You take these so that you don’t waste better food when you need to clear inventory space for drops.

If you don’t have the Trollheim Teleport spell, then you will need to substitute either climbing boots or 12 gold coins for the two laws and two fires that the spell uses.

If you have never been to the GWD before, you need to take a rope instead of one piece of food.

Trip Preparation

Make sure your prayer is fully charged, then go to any bank, if using Trollheim Teleport. If you aren’t, then your best bet again is to use a games necklace to go to Burthorpe and then bank either in the Warriors’ Guild (if you can access it) or the Rogues’ Den (if not). Put the games necklace back in the bank.

While banking, do the following:

  1. Use any type of cheap food to heal up completely.

  2. Make sure none of your other stats have been inadvertently lowered.

  3. Put on or check all your equipment to make sure it is correct.

  4. Get out of the bank all of the supplies you are taking with.
Getting to the Aviansies

Go to the God Wars Dungeon using the directions and maps I provides in the topic on location and access. Enter the dungeon and make your way south to the main combat area I described in “Choosing a Combat Position and Target Monsters”.

Starting Combat

When you arrive in the designated combat area, first set your staff to autocast your chosen spell. Once that’s done, maging the aviansies is pretty much the same as ranging them, as shown in Figure 460. The major difference between the two is that it takes longer to get kills when maging, and the management of food, potions and spells is different (because the supplies you bring with are different.)

Figure 460: Maging Aviansies

The technique is pretty much the same as maging any other monster.

Here’s how to make the most of your healing supplies at the start of combat:

1. First, use up your “disposable” food to free up inventory space for drops.

2. Fight without prayer until you are down about 15 to 20 hitpoints.

3.Turn on Protection from Ranged and fight using prayer until you are down to about 2/3 of full prayer. Then take two Saradomin brew doses and one super restore dose. This will restore health and prayer points and improve your Defence level.

4.Continue fighting without prayer, using food as necessary. As soon as you have room for them, start collecting bones for the Bones to Peaches spell.

Don’t start collecting low-value drops like feathers or body runes until you have enough inventory space that they won’t keep getting in your way. In fact, you may not want to bother taking body runes at all, preferring to leave space for more bones.

Combat Routine

Continue fighting, using up food to heal, and cast Bones to Peaches when necessary. Remember that you can get extra healing by temporarily dropping items like herbs to pick up more bones, casting B2P, and then eating enough peaches to make room for the items you dropped. This does slow you down a bit, though.

Once the Defence boost from the Saradomin brew doses starts to wear off, take two more Sara brew and one more super restore dose. Before you do that, get in a few kills with Protection from Ranged on, to make use of the prayer points you get from the super restore potions.

To maximize kills when maging, you’ll want to focus on fighting aviansies that are near “Zammy pets”, especially the gorak. Be sure to deal with issues like “stuck” pets quickly. Also keep an eye out for any aviansies that are already damaged and try to finish them off.

Ending the Trip

Since you have the Bones to Peaches spell, you can stay until your inventory space starts to get too full of drops for there to be enough room to collect bones. In addition, at some point you’ll run out of Sara brews and the lack of Defence boost will lead to taking more damage. Don’t try to push things by staying too long on one trip—with the Trollheim Teleport, banking and returning doesn’t take all that much time.

Before you go, be sure to use up any prayer points you may still have, since you can recharge prayer before going. This is also a good time to fill any inventory slots with drops from the aviansies, even if they are lower-valued ones like silver ore or anti-poison potions.

When you’re ready to depart, just cast the Home Teleport spell. Wait for it to activate, then recharge your prayer points (usually in Lumbridge) and get ready for another trip if you want to repeat the process.

Advanced Saradomin Godsword Variation

As with the single monster ranging method, you can bring with a Saradomin godsword for healing and to restore prayer points. I don’t think it is as valuable when maging, in part because of the Bones to Peaches capability, but you can bring it if you like.

For more details on the value of the sword, see “Extending Trips with the Saradomin Godsword”. To learn how best to actually use it, read “Advanced Saradomin Godsword Variation” in the topic on single monster ranging.

Additional Notes and Tips

Here are a few extra tips to keep in mind:

  • If you get swordfish as a drop and don’t have room to hold them all, you can sometimes “juggle” them (or other food items). Drop a few items and pick up the swordfish. You have about two minutes before they disappear; before that, drop some other items and pick up the items you dropped prior.

  • Don’t venture too far north going after aviansies, or you may find a Bandos monster coming after you (the one faction that is aggressive with your equipment.)

  • Be sure to periodically check the status of your Ahrim’s robes and repair them.

  • You can safely let your health get down to about 50% before ending a trip.
