Aviansies Magic/Ranged Training Guide - Quest, Skill and Equipment Prerequisites and Recommendations

Since aviansies are not a particularly challenging monster, they don’t require as much in terms of skills and equipment as some of the other monsters I cover here in TruthScape Monster Secrets. On the other hand, they are in the God Wars Dungeon (GWD), which does place certain demands on those who would enter it. You also need certain types of equipment to make the process as efficient and safe as possible.

In the subsections that follow, I’ll tell you what you absolutely need to have, and what I recommend, in terms of quests, skill levels, equipment and more.

Quest Prerequisites

In order to access the God Wars Dungeon, you must have at least started the Troll Stronghold quest—the one that gives you a law talisman for Runecrafting. This quest, in turn, requires you to have completed Death Plateau. Most players with at least moderate skill levels should have no problem with these basic minimum requirements.

If you want to use one of the single monster methods, you will likely need the Pendant of Armadyl in order to avoid being swarmed by all the aviansies in the multi-combat GWD. To get it, you must have completed (or at least be close to completing) the Temple of Ikov quest.

There are several other quests that I strongly recommend if you want to fight aviansies on a regular basis:

  • Eadger’s Ruse: This is the most important “not technically required” quest. It gives you the ability to use the Trollheim Teleport (if you have level 61 Magic), which makes getting to the GWD much faster and easier than the alternatives.

  • Rum Deal: You should complete this quest if you want to use the Prayer method. One of its rewards is the holy wrench, which provides extra prayer points when drinking prayer potions or super restore pots.

  • Horror from the Deep: This quest lets you get and use an unholy book, which is a very useful piece of equipment for fighting aviansies.
Skill Prerequisites

The exact skill levels that you need for training will depend on a number of factors. One, obviously, is whether you are training Magic or Ranged; another is whether you are using armor or prayer during combat. (I discuss these and other issues in the topic on strategy and trade-offs.) Of course, higher skill levels are always preferred, as they let you fight faster and more efficiently. On the other hand, you do not need super high levels at all in order to fight aviansies.

God Wars Dungeon Access

First things first. In order to access the GWD, you must have either 60 Strength or 60 Agility. These are absolute requirements or you cannot even get to the aviansies at all.

Combat Skills

There are no specific minimum combat skill levels for training on aviansies, but you should have reasonably high levels to get the most from the method. Which skills you need will depend on the skill you are training and the method you choose.

For ranging, you need a decently high Ranged level so you can kill monsters fast. I recommend at least a level of 60, though you can get by with a lower value—it will just take longer.

If you are training Magic instead, I recommend a level of at least 65 to avoid wasting runes on “splats”. Since the Magic Dart spell is the most cost effective, I also suggest having level 55 Slayer so you can use it. Other key Magic skill levels are 55 for High Alchemy (essential), 60 for Bones to Peaches (optional) and 61 for the Trollheim Teleport (essential or pretty close to it.)

You will want a decent level in either Defence or Prayer, depending on whether you are fighting a single monster at a time or doing multiples using prayer. I’d recommend at least a level of 70 for Defence if fighting without prayer, and at least Prayer level 60 if going that route. If training Magic I recommend Ahrim’s set, which also requires 70 Defence, and either a dragonfire shield (75 Defence) or granite shield (50 Defence and 50 Strength).

Specific hitpoint levels are not critical here, but you want as many HP as possible. I’d suggest a minimum of 60 if using prayer, or 70 if not.

Non-Combat Skills

Here are a few non-combat skills that will make aviansie fighting easier, faster or more enjoyable:

  • Agility: Getting into the GWD is a bit faster when you use the Agility method rather than Strength, so level 60 Agility is beneficial. Also, with a good Agility level, your run energy will restore faster at the start (it is always drained to zero before you enter the dungeon.)

  • Smithing and Fletching: If you have level 73 Smithing and level 61 Fletching, you can make your own addy bolts from the adamantite bars and feathers dropped by aviansies. This affords you some degree of self-sufficiency when ranging (and gives you XP in those two skills too, naturally.)

  • Hunter: In some cases, having imp boxes can be very useful, as it will let you keep more unstackable drops. To get them you need level 71 Hunter.
Equipment and Supplies Required

I will discuss equipment specifics in the pages that cover each method, but I’ll provide you with an overview here. I’m pleased to start out by emphasizing that one of the advantages of training on aviansies is that you do not need expensive equipment, which makes the technique accessible to a lot more people than fighting higher-level monsters.

Your primary gear will be based on the combat method you are using:

  • Ranging: You’ll want typical ranging armor, such as dragonhide armor, a coif, ranger boots, archer ring and so forth. You also need a bow and ammunition; I discuss choices for this on the strategy page.

  • Ranging with Prayer: With this method, you will want to replace much of your ranging gear with prayer equipment that lets you stay in combat longer. Aviansies have low defence and your bow provides decent Ranged attack bonuses, so it is not generally a problem to replace dragonhide armor with monk’s robes (for example).

  • Maging: Here you need to balance equipment that increases Magic attack with gear that provides at least some defence against the ranged attacks of the aviansies. I recommend using Ahrims set for its good maging attack abilities. Unfortunately, there are no magic robes that provide any Ranged defence, so using a shield is essential to prevent the aviansies from ripping you apart: a (charged) dragonfire is ideal, and a granite shield a reasonable, much cheaper alternative. A Slayer staff for casting Magic Dart is also important.

Your normal “combat costume” will have to be slightly modified to deal with one issue of the God Wars Dungeon: lots of aggressive monsters. As you may know, the GWD contains monsters that are perpetually continuing the long-over god wars. There are four different factions, and each monster will be aggressive towards you unless you wear a piece of equipment that corresponds to its god. Since you don’t want everything trying to attack you at once, you need to wear gear from these three gods:

  • Armadyl: Armadyl gear will prevent you from being attacked by aviansies until you are ready for them. Most people will use the Pendant of Armadyl for this purpose, but those who can afford the special (and pricey) Armadyl ranging armor can use that instead. Note that you don’t need this for the prayer method, where you want all the aviansies to attack at once!

  • Zamorak: The main areas where you’ll be fighting have many Zamorak monsters, so you need some Zammy gear to keep them off your back. For ranging, this is solved easily enough with an unholy book—it’s the best shield slot item for ranging anyway. It’s also good for maging, but there you need a real shield, so we’ll need to be more creative there. As an alternative you can use Zamorak blessed dragonhide or many other god items.

  • Saradomin: Some of the Saradomin critters can also get in your face while fighting aviansies; they are not as close to the main combat area, but they can do a lot of damage, so I recommend wearing some Sara gear as well. I usually use a Saradomin blessed coif (when ranging without prayer), a Saradomin mitre (for ranging with prayer or maging). Again, there are many other alternatives.

Supplies are pretty much what you’d expect. For ranging you need bolts or other ammo, and for maging, attack runes like deaths and minds for Magic Dart. Nature and fire runes are important as well, since aviansies drop many rune daggers and other alchable items. You will also need some combination of food and prayers, the details of which we’ll cover in each method’s description.

One more thing. The very first time you go to the God Wars Dungeon, you need to bring a rope so you can climb down. Once you have attached the rope to the entry hole, it remains permanently. But don’t forget it the first time!

Other Suggestions and Tips

I’ll conclude with a few miscellaneous suggestions.

If you are planning to mage the aviansies using Magic Dart, you’re going to need lots of death and mind runes. The Barrows is a great place to get them (along with many other rewards).

If you have a Saradomin godsword, you’ll want to bring it along. While you can’t fight the aviansies with it, the sword will let you attack other monsters to heal and restore prayer points, allowing you to significantly extend how long you can stay in the dungeon on each trip.

In a similar manner, a dragonfire shield can be helpful because of its great defence bonuses. You don’t need one—and I did my testing without one—but it certainly helps reduce how much damage you take.

Having access to the spell Bones to Peaches can be quite useful if fighting without prayer, as it will allow you to stay in the dungeon nearly indefinitely. You must “purchase” the spell from the Mage Training Arena for pizzazz points. If you can’t cast the spell yourself than you can use player-made Bones to Peaches tablets; this is more expensive, though.

Finally, note that you can’t use a cannon in the God Wars Dungeon. (Well, you can for about 10 seconds, at which point it blows up in a mushroom cloud. J)
