Aviansies Magic/Ranged Training Guide - Multiple Monster Ranged Method with Prayer

The multiple monster technique is the most efficient way to fight aviansies, because it maximizes both drop value and experience, and is also a good deal of fun. It takes advantage of the very useful ability of enchanted emerald bolts to not only poison, but let you know when the poison has taken effect. This, combined with the use of “Zammy pets”, lets you kill off multiple aviansies at once.

To get the most of this method, you need a reasonably high Ranged level, because you won’t be wearing as much gear that provides a ranging attack bonus. Also, you are better off with a higher Prayer level, as this will let you stay longer and get the most from prayer potions.

Here’s a summary of the key information about this technique:

  • Technique: Multiple Monster Ranged Aviansie Training with Prayer

  • Risk Level: Moderate. You need to watch your prayer level carefully; if it runs out you will take a lot of damage quickly.

  • Risk Level Relative to Other Techniques: High. This method isn’t super-risky, but it is clearly more risky than fighting aviansies one at a time.

  • Kills Per Trip: About 350 to 400, or even more if you bring extra prayer potions or your Prayer level is very high.

  • Kills Per Hour: About 175 to 180.

  • Cost Per Kill: About 625.

  • Net Profit Per Hour: Approximately 500k to 550k.

  • Experience Gained Per Hour: About 28k to 30k Ranged XP.

The estimates above are based on using recommended equipment and supplies, a Ranged level of about 90 and a Prayer level of around 80. Lower Ranged levels will result in lower kill, XP and profit values; lower Prayer levels will shorten trips.

Equipment

Your main goal here is to maximize Prayer bonuses, while still getting a decent ranged attack bonus, and ensuring you have at least least one piece of Saradomin and Zamorak gear so you aren’t attacked by those monsters. You do not need the Pendant of Armadyl here, because you want the aviansies to all attack you!

Here’s what I use and recommend (shown in Figure 457), along with alternatives:

  • Head: Saradomin or Zamorak mitre. Provides +5 Prayer bonus.

  • Cloak: Ava’s accumulator, as in the single combat case.

  • Neck: Saradomin or Zamorak stole, for its handy +10 Prayer bonus. If your Ranged level is relatively low, you may wish to use an amulet of fury instead for its ranged attack bonus (it also has +5 Prayer).

  • Quiver: 500 enchanted emerald (mithril) bolts. This is enough to keep you in the dungeon for a while.

  • Weapon: Rune crossbow.

  • Body: Monk’s robe top. Best prayer bonus for body armor. (Sadly, the nice god vestments have a lower bonus, which makes no sense.)

  • Shield: Unholy book. There’s no need to use anything else here.

  • Legs: Monk’s robe bottom.

  • Gloves: “Barrows” gloves from the Recipe for Disaster quest, or black dragonhide vambraces.

  • Feet: Ranger boots.

  • Ring: Archer ring.

Figure 457: Multiple Monster Ranged/Prayer Aviansies Training Equipment and Inventory

For this method the equipment is geared to balancing ranged attack and prayer bonuses, and inventory is changed dramatically, with prayer potions and (optional) imp boxes replacing food.

Note that this gear does not include any way of teleporting (nor do my inventory items below). I simply use the Home Teleport spell when done fighting, which also conveniently leaves me near an altar to recharge prayer. You will also get law and air runes as drops, which will let you teleport out if you need to go more quickly.

Inventory

Inventory items are relatively simple here, notably because there’s no need for any food. Here’s what I recommend (again, see Figure 457):

  • Runes: Law runes (2), fire runes (252) and nature runes (50). The two laws and two of the fires are for the Trollheim teleport; the remaining runes are for alching drops.

  • Holy Wrench: Gives you extra points from your prayer potions.

  • Stat Boosting: Three ranging (4) potions. This will allow you to stay for a long while and/or take ranging potion doses more frequently so you do more damage.

  • Prayer Restore: Ten prayer (4) potions and one super restore (4).

  • Emergency Healing: One Saradomin brew (4) potion. You will normally not take damage with this method, due to your Protection from Ranged prayer, but it is possible to accidentally get into combat with a melee or magic-using monster. If so, the Sara brew can be used to heal back up, followed by one or more doses of the super restore.

This leaves nine slots remaining. If you have imp boxes, I recommend taking three of them along, to let you keep more gems and herbs, and leave six slots empty. Otherwise, go with nine empty slots. It seems odd to go with empty inventory spaces, but you don’t really need anything else, and the extra slots make inventory management and drop collection a lot easier. (Of course, you can choose to take extra prayer potions instead, if you wish.)

As with the single combat method, if you don’t have the Trollheim Teleport spell, then you will need to substitute either climbing boots or 12 gold coins for the two laws and two fires that the spell uses. Also, if you have never been to the GWD before, you need to take a rope along.

Trip Preparation

Make sure your prayer is fully charged. If you are using Trollheim Teleport, you can finish preparations at any bank. If you aren’t, then I recommend using a games necklace to teleport to Burthorpe, and then going over to the bank either in the Warriors’ Guild (if you can access it) or the Rogues’ Den. Put the games necklace back in the bank.

While banking, do the following:

  1. Use any type of cheap food to heal up completely.

  2. Make sure none of your other stats have been inadvertently lowered.

  3. Put on or check all your equipment to make sure it is correct.

  4. Get out of the bank all of your inventory items.
Getting to the Aviansies

Go to the God Wars Dungeon using the directions and maps I provides in the topic on location and access. Enter the dungeon and make your way south to the main combat area I described in “Choosing a Combat Position and Target Monsters”.

Since you are not wearing a Pendant of Armadyl, the aviansies will be aggressive and will start attacking immediately. Put on Protection from Ranged as soon as they start to go after you. Once it is enabled, you should not turn it off until you leave the dungeon.

Starting Combat

For this method, I recommend staying roughly in the area around the geyser to the east of the main combat zone. You will be in combat immediately when you arrive—since the aviansies will be aggressive—so simply start going after them.

Use your first dose of ranging potion as soon as you can, even if you start out with your Ranged stat drained from its normal maximum. Otherwise you will hit a fair number of zeroes.

Since you arrived with six or more free inventory slots, and possibly with imp boxes, you won’t have any issues with inventory management. In fact, you can start collecting even low-value stacking drops like feathers and body runes immediately.

Combat Routine

The combat technique for this method is quite simple, conceptually: whenever you see an aviansie, attack it! J The only thing that makes it a bit tricky is that you will have so many aviansies you are fighting, combined with the need to keep track of several different things at once. I’ll spell these out so you can hopefully manage them more easily; with some experience it will all become second nature.

Your general goal with the aviansies is to ensure that you attack and poison as many of them in your local area as possible. The enchanted emerald bolts are perfect for this, because unlike melee weapon poisons, you can actually see when the poison has taken hold on the monster—this is indicated by the rising green “poison cloud”. Once you see it you know the aviansie is poisoned, and you can move on to the next one. Figure 458 shows an example of what it looks like, with four or five aviansies all coming after me simultaneously.

Figure 458: Fighting Multiple Aviansies with Prayer

This is how you do it. Note the poison damage hitting one of the aviansies.

If you have multiple aviansies poisoned in one area, which do you fight? There are a couple of ways to decide, depending on your priorities. If you want to maximize drops, always fight the ones that are near death first; they will then drop and another will respawn more quickly. On the other hand, you will net more XP if you concentrate on fighting ones that have more health, and let poison finish off the nearly-dead ones. Also, don’t waste time fighting ones that Zammy “pets” are going after—there’s no point. Let the pet kill the aviansie while you fight one that has no pet attacking it.

Don’t move around too much. It may be tempting to attack and poison 8 or 10 or more aviansies, but you’ll waste a lot of time running around and then running back to get drops. You’re better off sticking to the few in the area around the geyser.

Here are some of the major issues you need to keep an eye on while fighting:

  • Prayer Level: If your prayer runs out, you will suddenly have four, five or more aviansies hurling missiles at your flimsy monk’s robes. Check it frequently, and take another prayer pot dose whenever your prayer level is down more than 40%.

  • Ranged Level: My recommended supplies include 12 ranging potion doses and a total of 11 prayer / super restore pots. I suggest taking one ranging potion dose at the start, and then the other 11 after completing each of the 11 prayer or super restore potions.

  • Drops: Killing lots of aviansies doesn’t help you much if you let the drops disappear! Be sure to check around frequently for drops from aviansies that died as a result of damage from pets or poison, and pick them up. (This is another reason you should stay in a confined area without moving around too much.)

  • Hitpoints Level: As mentioned before, you will normally take no damage from this method, but you should still keep an eye on your HP.

  • Zammy Pets: Try to “encourage” them to help out in combat, and fix “stuck” pets when necessary.

Sometimes you may click on the wrong monster and not notice you are taking damage from a spiritual mage, Saradomin priest or whatever. If this happens, your best bet is to run away and come back so they stop being aggressive. If you are down a lot of hitpoints, take one or more doses of the Sara brew, then use the super restore to bring your Ranged level back up. If you don’t end up needing the Sara brew, just bring it back with you, and use the super restore like a prayer pot.

If you brought imp boxes, you may find it hard to use them due to all the aviansies attacking. A good place to “duck out” briefly to use the boxes is in the little alcove where the pyrefiends spawn.

Ending the Trip

You should start thinking about ending the trip once you run out of prayer potions. You can keep attacking aviansies while you drain your last prayer points after the potions are gone, but I suggest that you stop engaging new ones in combat once you are down to 20 points. Otherwise you’ll end up having to leave half-killed aviansies behind without getting their drops. Be sure to fill any inventory slots with drops from the aviansies, even if they are lower-valued ones like silver ore or anti-poison potions.

It is possible, depending on how much you moved around, that the aviansies will have become unaggressive by the time you have to leave. If so, you can use the Home Teleport spell and recharge prayer points in Lumbrdige. Otherwise, use the law runes and air runes you got as drops to teleport to somewhere like Camelot or Varrock, then make your way to an altar from there.

Additional Notes and Tips

A few miscellaneous tips:

  • If you have extra inventory space, keep a slot for the steel arrows that the accumulator constantly generates; this will save you the hassle of them showing up in a slot you were about to use for something else.

  • To save time, only use imp boxes once you have two herbs or gems to send to the bank.

  • Alch empty imp boxes if you need more space for drops.

  • Sad as it may seem, swordfish drops are worthless to you with this method. Just leave them on the ground. (It’s not worth trying to fight without prayer using the swordfish, since you don’t have armor.)

  • Don’t use the Sara brew doses unless you really need them; if you are down 10 or 20 points, you will slowly heal naturally anyway.
