Aviansies Magic/Ranged Training Guide - Monster Description, Statistics, Attacks and Defence

I’ve talked quite a bit about these mysterious “aviansies” but haven’t actually shown them to you yet, so I’d guess that at this point you’re ready to learn more about them. Fortunately, I’m ready to show you more about them, too, so let’s get to it. J

Meet the Aviansies

Aviansies (sometimes als collectively called aviantese) comprise the bulk of the followers of Armadyl in the God Wars Dungeon. They are found both in the central, common area of the dungeon—where followers of all four gods are found clashing with each other—and in the Armadyl stronghold called Armadyl's Eyrie. The different types of aviansie range in level from 69 all the way up to 148, though you will mainly be training on the lower level ones.

The word avian is an adjective meaning “of, relating to, or characteristic of birds”; it comes from the Latin word for bird, avis. As soon as you see aviansies, you’ll immediately understand why they were so named. In terms of appearance, they certainly are quite avian indeed, bearing broad wings and flying several feet above the ground. Their RuneScape “Examine” description is entirely appropriate to their appearance, as well: “Graceful, bird-like creature”. There are actually 13 different levels of aviansies, all appearing quite similar except for minor color variations; three examples are shown in Figure 445. As one of the newer monsters in the game, have been superbly animated by Jagex.

Figure 445: Meet the Aviansies

From left to right: level 71, level 83 and level 131 aviansies. You can see me in the last frame, which shows you that they are pretty big and they float rather high off the ground.

Since they float above the ground, it can sometimes be hard to spot aviansies when looking around the dungeon. Each bird-man casts a shadow below it, though, which can be used to find them. You can also click on this shadow to attack it, just as if you were clicking on the aviansie itself.

One additional nice aspect about aviansies from an appearance and practical standpoint is that they die quickly. By this, I mean that Jagex, mercifully, did not give them an annoying 10-second long death animation as it has done for other recent monster additions and upgrades.

Aviansie Levels and Statistics

As I just mentioned, there are 13 different types of aviansies, but all are quite similar except for their number of hitpoints and their attack and defence strength. Only five of the 13 levels are found in the common dungeon area where you’ll be training, so I will focus on those. Here is a summary of the aviansies’ essential stats:

  • Name: Aviansie.

  • Examine Description: “Graceful, bird-like creature”.

  • Levels and Hitpoints: Level 69 (70 hp), Level 71 (63 hp), Level 83 (86 hp), Level 89 (69 hp) and Level 131 (73 hp).

  • Number of spawns: Many; probably over 20 in the main dungeon area.

  • Respawn Speed: Fast (about 15 seconds on a full server)

  • Aggressive: Yes, unless wearing Pendant of Armadyl or other Armadyl gear.

  • Attacks: Ranged.

  • Maximum Attack Damage: About 10.

  • Immunities: Melee attacks.

  • Special or Unique Drops: None.

You may notice that there isn’t much rhyme or reason to the number of hitpoints that various aviansie types have. In particular, the level 83 variant stands out for having far more HP than the others—even the level 131! Why this is, I have no idea.

Offensive Characteristics and Attacks

The aviansies are fairly straightforward monsters from an offensive standpoint—they have only a simple Ranged attack. The lower level aviansies hurl what appear to be throwing axes at you, while the higher level ones toss a weapon that looks something like a javelin with barbs on it (Figure 446). The level 131 aviansies, though, use axes like the lower-level ones. Odd. Anyway, since they have a Ranged attack, you cannot kill them from “safe spots”; they will attack over several types of obstacles in the dungeon.

Figure 446: Incoming...

Aviansies hurl javelins or throwing axes at you, depending on their type/level.

Their attack is not particularly strong, only hitting up to about 10; this, of course, is part of what makes them excellent for training. The higher level aviansies do tend to hit somewhat more often than the lower level ones, especially the level 131 variant. For this reason you should avoid the level 131 aviansies unless fighting with prayer on.

As mentioned in the discussion of equipment prerequisites, aviansies are aggressive unless you are wearing an item of gear related to Armadyl, their god, which usually means the Pendant of Armadyl. With this in place, they will only attack if you go after them first.

Defensive Characteristics and Weaknesses

You probably already know about the only noteworthy defence that aviansies possess: they are immune to melee attacks. The game “justifies” this by saying that the aviansies are “flying too high” for you to hit them if you try to attack with melee. I do note with some amusement that the rather small pyrefiends in the dungeon don’t seem to have any problem with attacking aviansies, though! J

Incidentally, if you try to attack an aviansie with a melee weapon (or no weapon equipped), you will be unable to do so, but the aviansie will still “notice” that you tried to fight it and will attack back.

Aviansies are quite susceptible to Ranged attacks, and when I am wearing proper equipment I am usually able to kill them quite easily. The same is true of Magic; if anything, they may have even lower defence against mage attacks than they do ranging weapons. While I do have a fairly high Magic level (95), I’ve noticed that I only “splat” very rarely when fighting aviansies. I suspect that even players with a Magic level 20 or more below mine would have good success. (Note that despite their Magic susceptibility, maging them still takes longer because good bolts hit higher than typical magic training spells.)
